The annual rainfall in this area is 300 inches with a temperate climate - the ideal growing conditions for our variety of moss - Sphagnum Cristatum. Sphagnum Moss grows in a dense mat to a length of about two feet. When harvesting, only the moss above the water level is taken, so the plant can continue to grow and be harvested again in three to five years. The heavy bags of wet moss are lifted out of the swamp by helicopter, thus eliminating any environmental damage to the swamp. With most swamps being on Department of Conversation land, the moss resource is well managed. Permits to harvest are required and DOC staff oversee harvesting operations. This is a unique feature of the New Zealand moss industry where private enterprise and a Government agency (DOC) work together to ensure that the moss supply remains a sustainable renewable resource for the benefit of the environment and industry.

At these new stations, bare steel tanks were installed underground to store gasoline. The average life expectancy of a steel tank was 30 to 50 years depending on the rate of corrosion of the steel. Since the early 1980s, corrosion of steel tanks, along with faulty installation and operation, have resulted in nearly ubiquitous groundwater contamination by gasoline. Because nearly half of all Americans depend on groundwater for their drinking water ( map ), leaking gasoline tanks represent a significant public health hazard. Leaking gasoline tanks can also present the risk of fire and explosion because vapors from leaking tanks can travel through sewer lines into buildings.

When a home is not properly sealed and weatherized, it will loose heat during the winter and loose air conditioning during the summer, creating higher heating and cooling cost. The solution is to perform a pressurization test to locate air leaks and then use a combination  sealants and weatherization techniques to seal those air leaks in your walls, ceiling, doors and windows. 2: Kill Phantom Electrical Loads - electricity 3: Change Lights - Incandescent lighting is responsible for wasted electricity and added heat gain. These light bulbs of yesterday are slowly being phased out for more energy efficient Compact Florescent bulbs and LED lightbulbs. A new energy efficient CFL bulb can save about 150 kWh of electricity annually and save you approximately $37 over the life of the bulb. LED lightbulbs, although more expensive up front, will last much longer than CFLs and use less energy as well. 4: Window Renovation - Windows are generally the most significant energy sink in almost every home due to lack of insulation. In cooler climates gas filled double pane windows with high R-values are excellent and well worth the cost of replacing old single pane windows. In hotter climates, these same windows are not as effective as they only reduce convective and conductive heat gain but fall short in stopping radiant heat gain. Stoping radiant heat gain in hotter climates requires exterior shading elements or the use of an energy film which helps to block the suns UV rays.

The largest volume of a Pulastic floor is the shockpad. This shockpad is fabricated from recycled rubbertype waste. Recycling is now a fashionword but we have been using recycled materials for more than 30 years! The shockpad is about 60 % of the volume, in addition we have about 8 % natural compounds and about 14 % natural minerals. This equates to only 18 % of a pulastic flooring system as pure virgin synthetic. Since we do not use any timber there are no damages to forests. The polyurethane selflevelling layers do not contain any solvents and are free of mercury, lead, pcb, cadmium and flourocarbons. Due to the long lifespan, Pulastic floors generate a very limited amount of waste.
