Durand and Frederic Edwin Church Thomas Cole (February 1, 1801 - February 11, 1848) was a nineteenth century American artist whose works initiated the first indigenous art movement in the U.S. He is regarded as the "Founding Father" of the Hudson River School , an American art movement that flourished in the mid-nineteenth century and was concerned with the realistic portrayal of nature. His romanticized depiction of nature inspired not only artists of his time, but those that followed, to depict the inspiration and beauty of nature, often in a fantastic or allegorical fashion. His historical and allegorical paintings of the 1820s and 1830s gave way to the religious allegories that dominated the last decade of his life and still exhibited his genius for landscapes. In 1818, he moved his family to the United States, and worked in Philadelphia as an engraver. He then settled in Steubenville, Ohio and began to study art under an unknown mentor. He attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and moved to New York in 1825. His paintings of familiar American landscapes such as the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains became very well known and popular. After a visit to Europe from 1829 to 1832, Cole settled in New York and began a large series of paintings that depicted the rise and fall of civilization.

He arrived in the United States in 1818 and moved to Ohio, where he was impressed by the beauty of the countryside. In 1825 he went to New York, where his landscape paintings began to be appreciated. Largely self-taught, he depicted the scenery of the Hudson River valley and the Catskills, which he discovered on long walking trips, becoming a leader of the Hudson River school . In 1829 he went to Europe, where he spent some time sketching in England and Italy. In Paris he greatly admired the landscapes of Claude Lorrain. After he returned to New York, he was commissioned (1832) to paint his five famous allegorical scenes, farfetched and neoclassical in style, known as the Course of Empire (N.-Y. Historical Soc., New York City). This series and the Expulsion from the Garden of Eden (Mus. of Fine Arts, Boston) reflect his strong moralizing tendencies, combined with elements of fantasy; they are far less successful than his landscapes.
