    Extractions: London United Kingdom Nationality American Field Portraiture John Singleton Copley (1738 - 1815) was an American painter, born presumably in Boston Massachusetts . He is famous for his portraits of important figures in colonial New England , depicting in particular middle-class subjects. His paintings were innovative in their tendency to depict artifacts relating to these individuals' lives. From about 1760 until 1774, Copley painted the finest portraits of the colonial period. His forthright approach to characterization was quite different from the flattering, contemporary English society portrait. His directness of observation resulted in portraits that conveyed the innate nobility and heroic qualities of the people who pioneered the early American way of life. He is considered the greatest U.S. painter of the eighteenth century. He was also one of the pioneers of the private exhibition, orchestrating shows and marketing prints of his own work to mass audiences.

    Extractions: COPLEY, JOHN SINGLETON (1737-1815), English historical painter, was born of Irish parents at Boston, Massachusetts. He was self-educated, and commenced his career as a portraitpainter in his native city. The germ of his reputation in England was a little picture of a boy and squirrel, exhibited at the Society of Arts in 1760. In 1774 he went to Rome, and thence in 1775 came to England. In 1777 he was admitted associate of the Royal Academy; in 1783 he was made Academician on the exhibition of his most famous picture, the Death of Chatham , popularized immediately by Bartolozzi's elaborate engraving; and in 1790 he was commissioned to paint a portrait picture of the defence of Gibraltar.

John Singleton Copley was born to a modest tobacconist family in Boston, at the time, the largest city in North America. After his father’s death, his mother married engraver and painter, Peter Pelham, who among the other artists in their neighborhood, exposed the young Copley to the modest, fledgling world of art in New England. After his stepfather died in 1753, 13-year-old Copley began his career painting portraits to support the family. By the time he turned 20, Copley had created 40 portraits and was painting for New England’s uppermost society. In 1766 he submitted, Boy with a Squirrel , to an exhibition in London which caught the attention of Benjamin West and Reynolds, Sir Joshua . Soon after he was elected a member of the Incorporated Society of Artists of Great Britain and was urged to move to Europe where he could study the old masters. Copley would not make the move, however, until 1774. He studied in Italy and France before settling in London where he continued to impress the critics with his portraits. He and West developed a friendship that soon evaporated once Copley moved into the territory of historical painting, a realm that West had been considered the master of. A few bad business decisions made Copley at odds with the Royal Academy which cost him their support for the rest of his career. He continued painting into his seventies with waning success and even rebuke.
