His book Sex and Character is one of the few masterpieces of modern times. In it, Weininger overflows with profound insight, deepest love, and awesome courage. To quote the eloquent author of an old book: We have all come under the spell of Otto Weininger, even those of us who have never heard of him, for he was one of those geniuses whose ideas echo far beyond any sound that is made by their names. . . O tto Weininger's extraordinary life culminated in the publication of his timeless work Sex and Character . Soon after the publication he went to Italy to await results. There appeared to be none, and during the next four months an intellectual malady, described by his friends as "a too grave sense of responsibility," became acute. On October 4, 1903, at the age of 23, he took his own life. . . . "Sex & Character" began to sell. It ran through printing after printing. Edwards' Reason and Religion, An Introduction to the Philosophy of Religion . Instead, this book is merely taken as a representative example of how Rudolf Otto and his theory of numinosity are treated in a standard philosophy of religion book, a book that Edwards himself says was developed over eight years of teaching undergraduate courses in philosophy of religion [p. v]. Edwards' principal discussion of Otto occurs in his chapter, "Religious Language and Experience: MYSTICISM" [p. 289]. Otto himself is introduced in a subsection, "The Object and Vocabulary of Mysticism Experience" [p. 311], under the heading, "Rudolf Otto's Idea of the Holy" [p. 312]. Edwards says that the "holy" is "a thing of fascinating mystery and terrifying magnitude," and that "when we speak of fascination and terror, we are speaking about the psychological response of the self that has the experience, but mystics insist that it is the object of experience that is holy..." [p. 312].

Es handelte sich nach Arendts Worten um einen Täter mit „[...] recht bescheidenen geistigen Gaben [...]“ , der auf seine Karriere bedacht war. Die Aussagen Adolf Eichmanns, des ehemaligen Leiters des Referats „Judenangelegenheiten, Räumungsangelegenheiten“, spiegeln für sie durchweg Tatsachen wider, in denen das Böse banal, als nichts Besonderes, gleichgültig, auftritt: „[...] denn in dem Bericht selbst kommt die mögliche Banalität des Bösen nur auf der Ebene des Tatsächlichen zur Sprache, als ein Phänomen, das zu übersehen unmöglich war.“ Diese Bestimmung des Bösen stellte einen Bruch mit der Denktradition dar, schließlich verliert das Böse mit dieser Beschreibung seinen dämonischen Charakter.

Schily verteidigt Horst Mahler, der auf Grund seiner Kontakte zur Roten Armee Fraktion (RAF) vor Gericht steht. Schily lehnt das Schwurgericht wegen Befangenheit ab und beantragt, das Verfahren einzustellen. Im Stammheim-Prozess ist Schily als Vertrauensanwalt von Gudrun Ensslin Eintritt in die Partei Petra Kelly und Marieluise Beck-Oberdorf (geb. 1952) Mitglied des "Sprecherrates" der Grünen Bundestagsfraktion. Infolge der Ämterrotation verzichten die drei 1984 auf eine weitere Kandidatur für den Sprecherrat. Schily gilt als "Realo" innerhalb der Grünen. So empfiehlt er seiner Partei für die Zeit nach der Bundestagswahl 1987 auf ein Bündnis mit der Sozialdemokratischen Partei Deutschlands (SPD) hinzuarbeiten. Außerdem spricht er sich für die Anwendung des staatlichen Gewaltmonopols aus. Beide Äußerungen stoßen bei den "Fundamentalisten" der Partei auf heftigen Widerstand.
