Pei and Partners, with the exhibition Winslow Homer: Facing Nature. The impetus for the creation of this landmark building was Mr. Payson's gift to the Museum of his collection of works by Winslow Homer (183 6-1910), featuring 13 watercolors and four oils. Along with the remarkable paintings from the Charles Shipman Payson Collection, the exhibition will feature works from the private collection of the William M.B. Berger Charitable Trust including a rare and early Prouts Neck painting. Drawings, wood engravings, oils, and watercolors from other private collections and institutions will also complement the exhibition. Winslow Homer: Facing Nature will be on view at the Portland Museum of Art from May 9 to September 27, 1998. Leaping Trout

Sweat Galleries is the Winslow Homer Gallery, featuring paintings, watercolors, and graphics by this most beloved and acclaimed American artist. The Museum's collection of five pivotal oil paintings traces Homer's career from his early work as a Civil War correspondent for Harper's Weekly through the last two and a half decades of his life, which he spent on the coast of Maine. In a studio at Prouts Neck, just 12 miles from the Portland Museum of Art, he created the culminating paintings of his career. Homer's late seascapes, like the Museum's Weatherbeaten (1894), are alternately brooding and ecstatic, situating mankind within the natural drama of assault and resistance, struggle and survival. These paintings are augmented by several additional oils on long-term loan to the Museum, as well as a constantly rotating selection from the Museum's collection of 14 watercolors and nearly 400 prints. Also on view is a watercolor box owned and used by Homer, offering valuable insight into the working technique of this premier painter of Maine. Where is it in the Museum?

    Extractions: Please direct any comments to John J. Hender son Introduction ... Winslow Homer At the age of 19, Homer was apprenticed to J. H. Bufford's lithographic firm in Boston. Although the superior quality of his work earned him more and more responsibility, he found the work stifling and tedious, and upon attaining his majority he left the shop to become a freelance illustrator. In 1859 Homer moved to New York City, where he studied briefly at the N ational A cademy of D esign , took a few painting lessons with Frederic Rondel, and set up a studio at the 10th Street Studio Building. For the next 17 years, his major source of income came from drawings for illustrated weekly magazines, such as Harper's Weekly, Frank Leslie's Illustrated Weekly Newspaper, and Appleton's Journal. He devoted increasing attention to painting, however, and in 1865 was elected a member of the N ational A cademy of D esign and was further distinguished by the exhibition of his Prisoners at the Front in the Paris Exposition of 1866. Homer went to Paris that year, but little is known of his activities during the ten months he spent abroad.

The Museum is currently undergoing a major capital campaign to raise $10.5 million for the acquisition, preservation, and endowment of the Winslow Homer Studio. The Studio will play a major role in enhancing the Museum's association with Winslow Homer. The relationship between Winslow Homer and the Portland Museum of Art is long-standing and intimate. Homer exhibited at the Museum in 1893, then called the Portland Society of Art, during his lifetime. John Calvin Stevens, who designed elements of Homer's Prouts Neck Studio, also designed the Museum's L. D. M. Sweat Memorial Galleries (1911). In 1983, the Museum opened the Charles Shipman Payson Building, the result of a generous gift of 17 works by Winslow Homer from Mr. Payson, as well as $8 million to construct a building in which they would be housed.
