    Extractions: by Lynette Abel I have loved this portrait of Madame Pierre Gautreau by the American painter, John Singer Sargent, titled Madame X, since the first time I saw it. Aesthetic Realism taught me that what makes a work of art beautiful is what we are hoping for in our lives. "All beauty," Eli Siegel stated, "is a making one of opposites; and the making one of opposites is what we are going after in ourselves." I have come to see that Sargent's dramatic portrait makes a one of opposites I was longing to make sense of in myself. In his essay "A Woman Is the Oneness of Aesthetic Opposites," Mr. Siegel writes about 15 pairs of opposites in women. And this is what he writes about "Advancing: Recessive": I think Sargent's Madame X is an opportunity to study these opposites, which all women have. Sargent shows a haughty woman, ostentatious in her black satin dress with its jeweled strapsit reveals and hides at once. This portrait, when it first appeared at the Paris Salon in l884, shocked people and caused such a scandal that Sargent had to withdraw it. Yet, if all this painting showed was ostentation, I believe Sargent wouldn't have said, when he sold it to the Metropolitan Museum in l9l6, "I suppose it is the best thing I have done." It was at this time that Sargent asked that the title of the painting be changed to

The derision aroused by his portrait of Madame Gautreau when exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1884 interrupted what might have been a close connection with French art and led him to make London his headquarters as a portrait painter. But he contributed to the establishment of an insular offshoot of Impressionism in the New English Art Club, of which he was one of the founder members in 1886, and sought to arouse interest in Monet 's work for America. He had the greatest admiration for Monet and was influenced in his own style by the French master. At the time he painted this portrait he had recently bought one of Monet's paintings, Rock at Tréport The portrait was painted in the spring of 1888 at Giverny where Monet had gone to live not long before. The wife of his former patron, Mme Ernest Hoschedé, whom Monet had befriended and who was to become his second wife, appears at the right of the picture. Sargent had not attempted the translation of light and shade into terms of pure color in the essentially Impressionist fashion but indicates the splashes of sunlight through the trees with his own vivacity, and his capacity for the brilliant sketch is well exemplified in the figures. © 16 Jul 2002

Late in his career, he was a leading proponent of watercolor as a respectable medium for finished work. His American parents lived in Europe most of their lives and followed the social season between the capital cities. Traveling continuously with his parents, he showed early art talent and was encouraged by his mother, an amateur painter. In Rome at age 12, he studied with Carl Welsch, a German-American artist and in 1870 at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. In Paris, he was accepted in 1874 at the Ecole des Beaux Arts but switched to the less academically oriented atelier of Carolus Duran, who had major impact on Sargent's style. Duran was an adventurous portrait painter who blended realism with a certain freedom of style.
