Extractions: Elizabeth Siddal(1829-1862) was born on July 25, 1829, in Holborn, London, to Charles Crooke Siddall and Elizabeth Elenor Evans Siddall. Blessed with extraordinary beauty she caught the eye of a pre-Raphaelite painter, Walter Howell Deverell, as she worked in a bonnet store in Cranbourne Alley, London. In time, she modelled for Deverell, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Millais, and William Holman Hunt. She became Rossetti's mistress, and by 1852 began painting for herself and won the financial support of John Ruskin. Illness then struck, leading her to stop painting, and her engagement with Rossetti fell away in 1858. Before-the-Battle Clerk-Saunders Eve-of-St-Agnes Lady-Affixing-Pennant-to-a-Knight-s-Spear ... Soon known familiarly as 'Miss Sid', or 'the Sid', and then as Lizzie, she sat to Hunt, and to Millais for the drowning Ophelia . It was a trying experience, according to Arthur Huges: ...she had to lie in a large bath filled with water, which was kept at an even temperature by lamps placed beneath. One day, just as the picture was nearly finished, the lamps went out unnoticed by the artist, who was so intensely absorbed in his work that he thought of nothing else, and the poor lady was kept floating in the cold water till she was quite benumbed. Extractions: Dumfries, Scotland Nationality British Occupation Landscape artist William James Blacklock (3 March 1816, Shoreditch , London – 12 March 1858, Dumfries , Scotland) was an English landscape painter, painting scenery in Cumbria, the Lake District and the Scottish Borders. Blacklock was born in London in 1816, the second of five children. His father was James Blacklock (1782–1823), a bookseller and publisher, and his mother was Mary Ann Blacklock (née Pearson) (1784–1853). The Blacklock family had roots in Cumberland dating back to the 1730s, and in 1818 they moved from London to the small village of Cumwhitton , about eight miles east of Carlisle , where the family owned property and farmed. They are believed to have lived in Cumwhitton House, a detached, double fronted sandstone property dating back to 1818. As a boy, Blacklock was apprenticed to Charles Thurnam, a publisher and bookseller in Carlisle and a friend of his father.
Destinations UK - Highgate Cemetery, London, England Elizabeth Siddal Elizabeth Eleanor Siddal was said to be the epitome of aesthetic womanhood. Her mournful beauty appears time and again http://www.historic-uk.com/DestinationsUK/HighgateCemetery.htm
Extractions: THE history and heritage accommodation guide SITE MAP Welcome to Destinations UK HIGHGATE CEMETERY LONDON Perhaps one of our more unusual historical destinations, Highgate Cemetery is a famous cemetery located in Highgate, London. The cemetery in its original form (the older, Western part) was consecrated by the Bishop of London on 20 th May 1839. It was part of an initiative to provide seven large, modern cemeteries to ring the city of London. The inner-city cemeteries, mostly the graveyards of individual churches, had long been unable to cope with the number of burials and were seen as a health hazard and an undignified way to treat the dead. The first inhumation at Highgate Cemetery took place on the 26 th May, and was of Elizabeth Jackson, a 36 year old spinster of Golden Square in Soho.

Extractions: Mary Magdalene , c. 1858-60. Frederick Sandys. Seven young men calling themselves the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood ( P.R.B. ) gathered together in London in 1847, united by a shared distrust for the Royal Academy, the sanctioned art institution of the day. Instead, they turned for inspiration to the art of the Middle Agesthe time "before Raphael." Their subjects were drawn primarily from literature, including the Bible, Shakespeare, and the poets of their own age, such as Alfred Tennyson and John Keats. As the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood gradually dispersed, new inspiration appeared when William Morris and Dante Gabriel Rossetti became close friends. In 1861, Morris founded the firm that would become Morris and Company, designing hand-crafted household objects, and signaling the beginning of the Arts and Crafts Movement. By the late 1860s, new artists, including Edward Burne-Jones, Simeon Solomon, and Albert Moore, were introduced into the Pre-Raphaelite coterie, bringing fresh influences and issues to the table. This influx of new individuals led to the subtle merging of Pre-Raphaelitism with what is now referred to as the "Aesthetic Movement," prevalent in the 1870s through the 1890s. This style reflected a desire to move away from the sentimental narratives of the early Victorian period and to focus instead on images of "beauty" (often women) in which color harmony, the beauty of form, and compositional balance took precedence over narrative.
