After studying in Paris (1856-61), Vedder returned to the United States at the outbreak of the Civil War. He supported himself by illustrating comic valentines and calisthenics books and by drawing for Vanity Fair . It was during this period of hardship that Vedder conceived such fantastic and melancholic works as "The Lair of the Sea Serpent" (1865) and "The Lost Mind" (1864-65). Vedder settled permanently in Rome in 1866 but made frequent trips to the United States. In 1884 he illustrated an edition of a work well suited to his imaginative style. He also executed a large lunette mural, "Rome," for the Walker Gallery at Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine (1894), and five wall paintings and a mosaic for the Library of Congress (1896-97). His book Doubt and Other Things was published shortly before his death.

After eight months in the studio of Fran?ois-Edouard Picot, he settled in Florence until the end of 1860. There he learnt drawing from Raffaello Bonaiuti, became interested in the Florentine Renaissance and attended the free Accademia Galli. A more significant artistic inspiration came from the Italian artists at the Caff? Michelangiolo: Telemaco Signorini, Vincenzo Cabianca (1827-1902) and especially Nino Costa (1827-1902). This group sought new and untraditional pictorial solutions for their compositions and plein-air landscapes and were particularly interested in the experiences of Gustave Courbet and the Barbizon painters. They became known as Macchiaioli for their use of splashes ( macchia ) of light and shadows and for their revolutionary ( maquis ) attitude to prevailing styles. While still an adolescent, Elihu Vedder left New York and traveled with his family to the Caribbean, where he determined to be an artist. He journeyed to France in 1856 to study painting with Francois Edouard Picot; while in Europe he traveled in Italy and began a lifelong fascination with its art and landscape. Vedder returned to New York prior to the outbreak of the Civil War and tried to complete sketches for Vanity Fair while working to succeed as an artist; he recalls in his autobiography that he could earn fifty cents for an idea, $1.50 for an idea and a suggestive sketch, and $5 for a sketch drawn on a block, "But I found that my training, such as it was, was too serious for the touch-and-go style then in vogue" (Vedder, Digressions 198). During this lean period, he was often reduced to austere living conditions, once subsisting only on crackers and sausage (194). By 1865 he had finished some of the paintings that would bring him critical acclaim.
