For her, the pain was personal. That was her husband out there in Pittsburgh, missing those two field goals in the final two minutes of regulation. A day later, she still was emotional, choking up in a phone conversation with the Daily News. "I mean, honestly, it just makes me sick," she said from their home in Oakland. "I feel for him. Honestly, I hope the New York media show some mercy, or it could make a bad situation really worse, to be truthful. Everyone makes mistakes. I hope people can understand that." Nine days ago, Shanti traveled down the coast for the wild-card game in San Diego, where Doug made the biggest field goal of his career - a 28-yarder in overtime. The life of a kicker can change in a heartbeat. Against the Steelers, with a chance to lift the Jets to only their third AFC Championship Game since 1969, Brien missed from 47 and 43 yards. They lost in overtime, 20-17, the same score as the previous week. Shanti stayed home in Oakland, watching on TV with their two kids (ages 4 and 2), her sister and a few friends.
