Extractions: SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER KIRKLAND Levon Kirkland is as no-nonsense as they come. Take yesterday, when the free-agent linebacker appeared at Seahawks headquarters for the first time since agreeing to sign with the team last week. His arrival was draped in numbers. Kirkland Impressive numbers like the 112 tackles he has averaged the past eight seasons for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Incomprehensible numbers like the 144 consecutive games he has played since being a second-round draft choice in 1992 and his 124 starts in a row since moving into the lineup in the fifth game of the '93 season. Income-related numbers like his three-year, $7.5 million deal that includes a $2.3 million signing bonus. Intolerable numbers like the average of 399.4 yards the Seahawks yielded last year, which prompted the arrival of Kirkland as well as earlier free-agent signings of defensive tackles John Randle and Chad Eaton.

Extractions: Cowboys 27 - Steelers 17 Box Score TEMPE, Ariz. - It was the ultimate triumph for the richest and most talented team in football, and it concluded without a trophy tug between owner and coach. It could be redemption for beleaguered coach Barry Switzer and perhaps vindication for controversial Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith produced three touchdowns playing behind their Super Bowl XXXL offensive line as the Cowboys outlasted the Pittsburgh Steelers, 27-17, to take Super Bowl XXX. Cornerback Larry Brown was selected the Most Valuable Player for intercepting two Neil O'Donnell passes and returning them 44 and 33 yards. The Cowboys converted those turning-point plays into 14 decisive points in the second half while claiming an unprecedented third Super Bowl title in four seasons before 76,347 at Sun Devil Stadium. Jones handed the first Lombardi Trophy the team has won since Jimmy Johnson's dismissal to Switzer, who held it firm and thrust it high.

Extractions: My favorite Steeler of all time is Iron Mike Webster. The dedication and true grit of a mans man made him a role model for any kid. I wore his number 52(which should be retired) when playing pop warner football. Although I never played ball in high school his work ethic has followed me throughout the years. He was the first at practice and the last to leave never missing a game. He died with his personal dignity intact, not asking for handouts or help from anyone. The Steelers should have done more for Webby, even though he did pass up a coaching job offered to go on playing the sport he loved. He gave new meaning to the phrase NO PAIN NO GAIN. In the end paying for it with his life. He gave it all. When GOD made IRON MIKE he broke the mold.
