Charles was born on 29 May 1630, the eldest surviving son of Charles I. He was 12 when the Civil War began and two years later was appointed nominal commander-in-chief in western England. With the parliamentary victory he was forced into exile on the continent. He was in the Netherlands when, in 1649, he learnt of his father's execution. In 1650, Charles did a deal with the Scots and was proclaimed king. With a Scottish army he invaded England but was defeated by Cromwell at the Battle of Worcester in 1651. He again escaped into exile and it was not until 1660 that he was invited back to England to reclaim his throne. Although those who had signed Charles I's death warrant were punished, the new king pursued a policy of political tolerance and power-sharing. His desire for religious toleration, due in large part to his own leanings towards Catholicism, were to prove more contentious. He made a number of attempts to formalise toleration of Catholics and Non-conformists but was forced to back down in the face of a strongly hostile parliament.

Charles Oakley Homepage Fan site with news, information, and pictures of one of the hardest working players in the NBA. http://kshen.tripod.com/
Extractions: Charles Oakley! Charles Oakley embodies the gritty character of the New York Knicks. He is the heart and soul of the team , and is (to my knowledge), the only player ever to get a technical foul for having his jersey untucked! Some of my favorite things about Oakley?- the way he throws himself around the court, his poor balance and jumping ability, his knack for drawing offensive charges, his bold full court outlet passes, and the arc he gets on his free throws. Where will he end up? May 22, 2006- Oakley got a shout-out a while back on The Sports Guy ESPN.com column about All-Star weekend: The John Shaft Award This goes to Oakley. One of the networks needs to have a "Coolest guy on the planet" contest because Oakley would absolutely win. You know those "Road House" scenes in which Swayze just stands in the bar, surveying the scene with a thin smile on his face, barely moving a fingernail and meanwhile, 10 drunk guys are brawling a few feet away from him? That's what Oakley is like. You could hire some extras to play gang members at one of these parties, then have them fire blanks at each other 10 feet from Oakley and I'm not even sure he would flinch. The great thing about him: He served as MJ's enforcer in Chicago, and now they're both retired ... and from what I could tell, he's still Jordan's enforcer. Could there be a greater tribute in life to someone's kickassability than Michael Jordan himself deciding, "You know what? I need to make sure he's still on my side. I don't care if we're in our 40s."
The Lighthouse, Mackintosh House, The Hunterian Art Gallery, Glasgow School of Art).

See also: American Art VIEW IMAGE LIST "Luckily or not, Charles Demuth painted one picture so famous that practically every American who looks at art knows it. The Figure 5 in Gold , 1928, is a prediction of Pop art , based on an Imagist poem, "The Great Figure," by his friend William Carlos Williams: Among the rain through the dark city. "Imagist" because each line, a snap unit of meaning, is meant by its isolation to be perfectly clear, a pulse in itself, without narrative - suspended for contemplation, like elements in a painting. Obviously Demuth's rendering has something in common with Hartley's arrays of banners, numbers, and emblems, and in fact Williams later recalled that he had seen and heard the firetruck in question from the window of Marsden Hartley's studio on Fifteenth Street. Here are the streetlights, the red back of the truck and the engine company number 5, that gloss-enamel heroic heraldry of the New York Fire Department, interspersed with lettered apostrophes to Williams: "BILL," "CARLO[S]," and, at the bottom left, "W.C.W." next to his own initials, "C.D."

Extractions: Born in Elmira, NY, on September 17, 1884, Griffes displayed an early interest in painting and drama. Recuperating from typhoid fever at age eleven, he grew fascinated with his sister Katharine's practicing the European classics on the piano, and he set himself about to master the instrument. At thirteen he began his studies with Mary Selena Broughton, who remained his mentor and friend throughout his life. It was Miss Broughton who financed Griffes' 1903 voyage to Berlin, where he studied for four years, the last two of them with Humperdinck. As it had for MacDowell and other Americans abroad, the German experience plunged Griffes into the
