As a college athlete, Lou Boudreau seemed to have several options after his graduation. However, the captain of the basketball and baseball teams at the University of Illinois signed a deal to join the Cleveland Indians following his graduation. Big 10 officials heard about his agreement and ruled that Boudreau was ineligible to compete as an amateur in college. So, Boudreau appeared as a pinch hitter in one game with the Indians during the 1938 season. He also played professional basketball with Hammond, Indiana's entry into the National Basketball League. At the beginning of the 1939 season, Boudreau found himself with the Buffalo Bisons of the International League. Boudreau had played third base or caught during his college career, but Buffalo manager Steve O'Neill moved Boudreau to shortstop and teamed him up with second baseman Ray Mack. The two worked together beautifully and both were called up to Cleveland in the second half of the seasons. In his first full season with the Indians in 1940, Boudreau hit .295 and drove in 100 runs. His performance earned him a spot in the 1940 All-Star game. In the 1942 season, Boudreau, just 24, was named player-manager of the team. It made him the youngest individual ever to manage a Major League team from the beginning of a season.

Extractions: AUCTIONS Example of auction Boudreau, Lou Louis Boudreau, born in 1917 in Illinois, was a world-famous MLB player and manager. Boudreau played basketball and baseball throughout high school and college and was even captain of both teams at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign when he was invited to play professional. He was given an undisclosed sum of money by the general manager of the Cleveland Indians to convince him to play for the team after his graduation, but his father complained to the Big Ten Conference and Boudreau was deemed ineligible for college sports. He spent his final two years at Illinois playing pro basketball in the NBA. After graduation, Boudreau did, in fact, join the Indians in 1938 and remained with the team until 1951. During this period, he earned seven All-Star selections, the 1948 American League MVP title, and a World Series Championship. It was with the Indians that Boudreau helped stop Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak in 1941. After this season, he was invited to serve as a player-manager of the team at only 25 years old. From 1942 to 1950 he served as this capacity, even managing the team throughout World War II. In 1951 Boudreau joined the Boston Red Sox as player, but he retired from playing in 1952 and became the team’s manager until 1954. He also managed the Kansas City Athletics and the Chicago Cubs before retiring after the 1960 season. Boudreau was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1970 and passed away in 2001.
