Extractions: SAVANNAH Ð Dr. Ronald H. Grizzle, pastor of First Baptist Church in Columbus, was honored by Mercer University with the Louie D. Newton Award for Service to the University for his role of support in the founding and growth of the James and Carolyn McAfee School of Theology at Mercer. "Ron is a respected minister, gifted preacher, caring pastor and is called by God to serve others," said Dr. Jim Bruner, senior assistant to the president at Mercer. "Ron has been a faithful and steadfast friend and supporter of Mercer University, especially the McAfee School of Theology." Grizzle grew up in Hall County, with plans of a career in journalism. He earned the bachelor of arts in journalism degree cum laude at the University of Georgia, in 1974 and later served as news editor of The Piedmont Herald in Toccoa and as assistant director of public relations at West Georgia College in Carrollton. While in Carrollton in 1976, he was called to the ministry, and served as pastor of Faith Baptist Chapel (now Calvary Baptist Church). The next year, he entered Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he earned the master of divinity degree cum laude in 1980. His ministerial leadership already was evidenced as he received the Midwestern Preaching Award and was selected for WhoÕs Who in American Colleges and Universities.
