Extractions: Faqs.org homepage Abstracts index Travel industry Article Abstract: Spending on the UK leisure market is predicted to increase by 4.2% during 1998 compared with an increase of 3.6% forecast for consumer spending during 1998. The fastest growing sector will be overseas holidays, which will grow 7.2% during 1998, followed by the home entertainment sector which is predicted to increase by 5.6% during 1998. Consumer confidence and a strong pound will encourage expenditure on leisure items such as eating out, cinema, foreign holidays and home entertainment. An aging but active population will benefit sectors such as golf, gardening and overseas holidays. author: Gratton, Chris Publisher: Dicestar Ltd. There were 54 leisure companies in the world's top 500 firms in 1996. Japan was top of the international league table with 17 of these 54 companies, second was the US with 16, and the UK was in third position with nine. The UK strength comes from the diversification of its leisure companies, which has been a response to the volatility of the sector.

Extractions: Faqs.org homepage Abstracts index Travel industry Article Abstract: The World Leisure and Recreation Association conference took place in Cardiff, Wales, from July 15-19 1996. Most of the 220 speeches were based on all kinds of leisure, but 40 focused on tourism and 25 on sport, with four of them focusing on sports tourism. Sheffield Hallam University's Simon Holiday was among those who spoke of people in the UK having too little or too much leisure because of unemployment or increased working hours. Some speeches looked at women's lack of leisure in a changing society. There was some indication that the idea of increased leisure is not accurate. author: Gratton, Chris Publisher: Dicestar Ltd. (UK) Conferences, meetings and seminars, International aspects, World Leisure and Recreation Association User Contributions: Comment about this article or add new information about this topic: Comment: (50-4000 characters) Name: E-mail: Security Code: Display my email: Article Abstract: The UK leisure industry is expected to record growth of 2.5% in spending volume in 2000 after a slow down during 1998 which saw growth of only 1.6%. The industry has been boosted by low interest rates and a return of consumer confidence. The 1998 leisure market was kept depressed by large numbers of people staying at home to watch the 1998 Football World Cup and a very wet summer. The 1999 market will be helped by late interest in Millennium celebrations and increased spending power.
