Because of his puckhandling prowess, Canadian hockey personality Don Cherry named Turco as "the smartest goalie in the NHL." Unlike most Canadians in the NHL, Turco did not play major junior hockey, instead playing for the University of Michigan , with whom he won two NCAA championships. After playing minor hockey for the S.S. Marie Legion program in his hometown, Turco was undrafted by the Ontario Hockey League. He signed as a 17-year old with the Cambridge Winterhawks Jr.B. team in 1992 and played two seasons with the OHA team before accepting an NCAA scholarship at U. Michigan (CCHA). He was drafted in the fifth round of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft by the Dallas Stars, and went on to play for Michigan that fall. Turco earned many awards in his four years at Michigan, including Rookie of the Year in 1995, Tournament MVP in 1998, and nominations to the First All-Star team in 1997, the Second All-Star Team in 1998, and the All-Tournament Team in 1996 and 1998. Only goaltenders who played 25 games or more in the season are eligible for the award. A goaltender's save percentage represents the percentage of shots on goal that he stops, and is calculated by dividing the number of saves by the total number of shots on goal. The award was first presented at the conclusion of the season, and is named in honor of former Detroit Red Wings and Buffalo Sabres goaltender Roger Crozier , a Calder and Conn Smythe Trophy winner who played in the NHL from 1964 to 1977.

(Mike Heika, The Hockey News Future Watch 1998) "Turco, 23, could be ready to step up to the NHL soon. In his first season of International League play following a stellar college career, he has impressed scouts with his cool calm and quick reactions. Still, the Stars aren't about to put any undue pressure on him. "Let's keep this in perspective," [Dallas director of player personnel Craig] Button said. "He was playing 40 games a year in college. He still needs to learn how to function in a pro system."" (Mike Heika, The Hockey News Future Watch 1999) "A great collegiate netminder at Michigan, where he was 127-28-7 lifetime, Turco took part in the IHL's all-star game last season. Just needs a little more seasoning. Small in stature, but big in heart, Turco's known for his reflexes and good positioning." (The Sports Forecaster 1999-2000, p. 201)

Extractions: A synopsis of a study of the chances of a career in elite levels of hockey for players developed in Ontario’s minor hockey system. By Jim Parcels package1@hotmail.com April ‘2002 Hockey. It’s one of the few things we can call “Canadian” through and through. It’s a game that we are exposed to from the early stages of our childhood through a cultural bond no other country can equal. Hockey is a game that children, teenagers, adults and seniors all have a solid affinity for through their past, present and future. It seems that everyone in this country has a strong knowledge, personal relationship or direct attachment to our game and the players involved at all levels. In recent years stories of parents, coaches, managers and recruiters turning the innocence of minor hockey into a perceived breeding ground for “future stars” has created a disproportionate amount of pressure on young athletes to exceed and “develop”. Parents believe that if their kid is an elite level player in his league, they believe he’s destined to make the NHL – even though there maybe about 2,000 players similar in calibre as their son across Canada. My journey through Ontario’s amateur hockey has been diverse. After graduating college, I started out as a 20-year old trainer for the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in 1989 before a three year tenure as marketing director for the Guelph Storm.
