Biography by Hal Erickson American producer/director/cinematographer George Stevens made his professional acting debut at age five in the company of his actor parents. Developing an interest in photography as a hobby, Stevens became an assistant movie cameraman at the age of 17. From 1927 through 1930, he was principal cameraman at Hal Roach Studios, shooting such classic two-reelers as Laurel and Hardy 's Two Tars (1928) and Below Zero (1930), as well as a handful of feature films, including the 1927 Western No Man's Law . Stevens was elevated to director in 1930 for Roach's Boy Friends series. Dismissed from Roach during an economy drive in 1931, Stevens moved to Universal and then to RKO to direct comedy shorts (he later professed to hate two-reel comedies, though he enjoyed the company of the comedians with whom he worked, especially Laurel and Hardy ). RKO promoted Stevens to features in 1934; after several medium-budget projects, he was assigned the "A" feature

Collider.com recently interviewed NCIS: Los Angeles actress Daniela Ruah about her role in the upcoming feature about the Tuskegee Airmen in World War II, and what it was like working with George Lucas, who recently took over directing duties to film some re-shoots. What was it like to have the opportunity to work on Red Tails ? How was that experience? Daniela: That was a wonderful experience, mainly because it was my first big film. Just to be able to work on something that came out of George Lucas’ mind was quite an honor. Initially, it was directed by Anthony Hemingway, and then George Lucas wanted to change some of the tone of it and decided to direct it himself, so we had a few re-shoots and I got to work specifically with George Lucas on those re-shoots. That was really special, to see how he works and to see what the process is. They only had me for a weekend because I was shooting the show, so everything had to be on the ball, at all times. Who do you play in the film?

Extractions: View other movie reviews Find a movie: George Washington Thing move slower in the South. Life passes by at a slower clip and people have more time. Sometimes too much time. George Washington , the new film by David Gordon Green, plays out like a dream. It is less a movie and more an experience. The scenes wash over the screen slowly, drenching the theater in a slow moving exploration of the mind's of children. Almost nothing happens in the first half-hour of the movie. But George Washington is never boring. It slyly sucks in viewers, who can almost feel the humidity sapping the energy from them. Green doesn't use actors. He uses actual children, so it seems more like watching people instead of watching a movie. Candace Evanofski, Donald Holden, Curtis Cotton III, and Eddie Rouse give strong performances not by acting, but just by doing. The children live in a depressed town where nobody seems to be doing anything. The kids wander around during the day, stealing cars, playing in abandoned buildings, and anything else to pass the time. There are people who work, but even they do not seem to be doing anything. Adding to the disquieting sense of false serenity is Green's sparse use of dialogue. The people seem almost reluctant to speak at times, preferring silence to conversation. The pivotal moment in George Washington comes when an accident happens, causing the death of one of the children. The remainder of the movie deals with how the other children come to terms with the death. It is not a pretty sight. These children have no idea how to deal with anything as serious as death. Each has a different reaction, but all of them flounder while trying to deal with things their own way. They simply cannot cope with the circumstances. Green also does not disappoint with a cliche ending.

Extractions: View other movie reviews Find a movie: The Concert for George When George Harrison died, the outpouring of emotion was palpable. It reminded everybody that even the greatest people are mortal. He was also the second Beatle to pass one, which demonstrates (whether people want to accept it or not) the passage of time. The Concert for George is a concert documentary of a historic one-night concert that took place on November 29th, 2002, and London's Royal Albert Hall. It was exactly one year after Harrison's passing, and served as a celebration for Harrison. The caliber of artist there was certainly phenomenal. The unofficial hosts were Eric Clapton, George's son Dhani, and Jeff Lynne. Other people that showed up were surviving Beatles Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney, Joe Brown, Ravi Shankar, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The performances are notable for their heartfelt nature. This is not a group of people coming together to make a quick buck. These are friends of George Harrison who want to remember him by playing his music. And the love for their friend comes through in their music. Harrison has been in rock circles so long that everybody feels that they know him somehow, so a tribute like this is only fitting. Director David Leland ( Running Wild The Land Girls ) alternates between actual performances and rehearsals. It is a little disconcerting, since he interrupts the music a lot, or splices together practice sessions with the actual performance. Since Leland made the decision to have a minimum amount of dialogue or much of anything else, switching back and forth is one of the few missteps he makes. The other is a complete lack of artist identification. Sure, McCartney, Starr, Clapton and Petty are easy to recognize, but Brown, Lynne, and some of the other artists are not, especially for younger people. But these are small complaints, especially when he focuses on Harrison's music.

George Herbert Summary of more than just the major poems. http://faculty.goucher.edu/eng211/george_herbert.htm
Extractions: George Herbert, The Temple Genre: sacred lyric collection imitating the architectural structure of a church while tracing the story of the persona's struggle with faith. Form: extraordinary metrical experiments, including "shaped poems," the most famous of which are "The Altar" and "Easter Wings." The book as a whole also has the form of a spiritual autobiography in lyrics, sacralizing the sonnet cycle's obsessive narration of the Lover-Beloved relationship and redirecting its interest in philosophy to the limitations of will-directed reason and the power of faith to command the believer. Characters: Herbert's persona is almost indistinguishable from his historical one, except that some of these poetic situations clearly are fanciful, and the personae of "Love," "God," "heart," arise from the medieval allegorical tradition but transcend it by means of Herbert's dexterous and surprising ability to make them psychological forces as well as metaphysical phenomena. Summary: Herbert's struggle tends to reflect his personal ambitions for a worldly life which were set against the demands of his rural parsonage at Bemerton. His ambition raised him from the fifth son of a dead Welch father to a member of Parliament and of the faculty of Cambridge. But the death of patrons led him to reconsider his objectives, and his last 3 years he lived as a poor country parson and wrote all the poems in

Authors : George Orwell Study Guides and Essays by George Orwell Animal Farm Burmese Days George Orwell George Orwell is the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair: essayist, novelist, literary critic, advocate and fighter for political change, and man of contradictions. Blair was born on June 25, 1903, in the Bengal region of Eastern India, which was a British territory. He was the son of Richard Walmesley Blair, a civil servant, and Ida Mabel Blair. Their only son was the middle child. He moved to England with his mother and sisters at the age of one. He displayed academic talent from a young age, so his mother took pains to ensure his attendance at a well-known boarding school called St. Cyprian’s. His family was neither poor nor wealthy, and Blair attended St. Cyprian’s on a scholarship. Blair excelled academically there but faced many hardships in its puritanical, cutthroat environment. In the autobiographical essay “Such, Such Were the Joys,” Blair/Orwell describes the social challenges he endured as a scholarship student among England’s wealthy elite. (These challenges would inform his satires of social stratification in his literary works, including Animal Farm .) In the essay, he describes his child self with much sympathy and feeling for the child's perspective. Such experiments in empathy prepared him to create Animal Farm's brilliantly naive narrator.
