Extractions: an unofficial site It was a pretty ordinary effort on my part. Andre Agassi cruised in his opening-round match in the Salem Open today, breezing to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Italy's Gianluca Pozzi. Agassi is in the tournament as a wild-card entry, but was seeded third. Second-seeded Patrick Rafter of Australia was ousted in his first match by German Bernd Karbacher 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-1), 6-2. Rafter, the two-time defending U.S. Open champion, blamed his loss on poor serving in the hardcourt event. "It was a pretty ordinary effort on my part. The court conditions were very difficult and it was very hard to see the ball. I also found nothing on my serve," said a dejected Rafter.

Extractions: 2002 "Time To Get a Day Job" Awards Well, here it is...a tradition started by Jacqueline Dupree (JDthe stat queen) back in 1990. So that would make this the 13th annual " Time To Get a Day Job Awards ." This "honors" those players who have been KO'd in the first round (or second round if they received a first round bye) of tournaments on the ATP Tour (not qualies or challengers). It is sorted in two ways: By number of first round losses and then by percentage to total tournaments played. And, remember, this is all in fun Note: Tournaments do not include World Team Cup or Tennis Masters Cup due to different format, just the grand slams, tennis masters series and international series events. So let's get to the awards. Our grand prize winners this year are Stefan Koubek and Andreas Vinciguerra . Both have started out well in 2003 so perhaps 2002 served as a wake-up call for these two. Stefan Koubek takes home the crown for most first round loses. He suffered 19 of them, two more than any other player. Jan Vacek and Mariano Zabaleta were next on the list with 17 each and three players finished with 16, Albert Portas, Julien Boutter, and Andrea Gaudenzi. In the category of highest percentage of first round losses, that goes to Andreas Vinciguerra who had a dismal year. At one point, Vinciguerra was 1-17 overall and at the ATP level, he finished the year losing 10 of his 12 opening matches. Alex Kim was a close second, losing 9 of 11 and Alexandre Simoni lost 8 of 10.
