    Extractions: JOHN MILLINGTON SYNGE (1871-1909) The following biography was originally published in European Theories of the Drama BORN in Dublin in 1871, Synge studied music before going to Paris to write. There he was saved for his native ireland by William Butler Yeats in 1899 and persuaded that he must write about his own land. He went off on a second trip to the isolated Aran Islands, where he studied the local dialects, characters, and folklore. He began to write plays of peasant life, employing the natural speech which he had learned. His first play, In the Shadow of the Glen , was performed in 1903 by the Irish National Theatre, of which Yeats and Lady Gregory were co-founders. In 1904, Synge's brief peasant tragedy, Riders to the Sea , was staged at this company's new home, the Abbey Theatre, and Synge became the Abbey's literary adviser. Other folk plays followed, including his comedy about a mock-hero, The Playboy of the Western World (1907), which caused patriots to riot at the theatre. Synge died in 1909.

Her daughter, Cathleen, is busy with household tasks, when another daughter, Nora, slips quietly into the kitchen with a bundle given her by the young priest. It contains part of the clothes taken from the body of a drowned man far in the north. They have been sent to Maurya's cottage with a view to possible identification. As Maurya shows signs of waking the girls hide the bundle until sometime when they shall be alone. Maurya's grieving for Michael is now coupled with fear of losing Bartley, her only remaining son. Five sons and a husband she has already lost to the sea. Will that insatiable tyrant insist on taking her sixth. The priest says not. But now Bartley insists that he will cross to the mainland this very day, in spite of winds and high seas, to dispose of a horse at the fair. In a fit of pique at this only remaining son for not listening to her pleas, Maurya lets him go without her blessing. The girls persuade her to intercept him with the lunch they had forgotten to give him and so to make opportunity for that blessing a mother should have given.

After studying languages at Trinity College, Dublin, Synge decided to become a musician, pursuing his studies from 1893 to 1897 in Germany, Italy, and France. By 1899, when he met William Butler Yeats in Paris, he had turned to writing literary criticism. Yeats inspired him with enthusiasm for the Irish renaissance and advised him to abandon scholarly pursuits to go to the Aran Islands and draw material from life. Already struggling against the progression of a lymphatic sarcoma that was to cause his death, Synge lived in the islands during part of each year (1899-1902), observing the people and learning their language, recording his impressions in The Aran Islands (1907) and basing his one-act plays The Shadow of the Glen (first performed 1903) and Riders to the Sea (1904) on islanders' stories. He was a key figure in the Irish Literary Revival and was one of the cofounders of the Abbey Theatre. He is best known for the play The Playboy of the Western World , which caused riots in Dublin during its opening run at the Abbey. Although he came from a middle-class Protestant background, Synge's writings are mainly concerned with the world of the Roman Catholic peasants of rural Ireland and with what he saw as the essential paganism of their world view. Synge suffered from Hodgkin's disease, a form of cancer that was untreatable at the time. He died just weeks short of his 38th birthday. Synge was born in Newtown Villas, Rathfarnham, County Dublin. Rathfarnham was a rural part of the county at that time although it is now a busy suburb. He was the youngest son in a family of eight children. His family on his father's side were landed gentry from Glanmore Castle, County Wicklow and his maternal grandfather, Robert Traill, had been a Church of Ireland rector in Schull, County Cork and a member of the Schull Relief Committee during the Irish potato famine. His grandfather, John Hatch Synge, was an admirer of the educationalist Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi and founded an experimental school on the family estate. His father, also called John Hatch Synge, was a barrister who contracted smallpox and died in 1872 at the age of 49. Synge's mother, who had a private income from lands in County Galway, then moved the family to the house next door to her mother in Rathgar, Dublin. Synge had a happy childhood here, playing and developing an interest in ornithology along the banks of the River Dodder and in the grounds of Rathfarnham Castle, both of which were nearby, and during family holidays at the seaside resort of Greystones, Wicklow and the family estate at Glanmore.
