The place is all jutting pipes and strange angles of symmetry, the whole room being constructed in the shape of a something -agram (I lost count of the corners) with a kind of inverted trampoline thing pinned onto the roof. It's a design to match the nature of the city, of course, yet this overtly industrial piece of architecture oddly glows with a warmth and cosiness. A setting, on the face of it, a trifle too smug for the expected impact of tonight's entertainment. There are a selection of film shorts and videos (even Cabs-own clips) running for 90 minutes or so before the arrival of the group. A curious blurring action. It felt as if they'd already arrived before they actually had. Furthermore, there's an eerie switch from screen watching to people watching. Particularly as, in the case of the Cabs, you can only 'watch' fleeting details in a wider field of scattered vision.

An acerbic social critic, Voltaire condemned injustice, clerical abuses, prejudice , and fanaticism. He rejected formalized religion, which he saw as superstitious and irrational, although as a deist , he believed in a supreme being. Voltaire emphasized reason , despised democracy as the rule of the mob, and believed that an enlightened monarchy , informed by the counsels of the wise, was best suited to govern.     Extractions: Letters on the English or Lettres Philosophiques, c. 1778 Introduction Francois-Marie Arouet, known by his assumed name of Voltaire, was born at Paris, November 21, 1694. His father was a well-to-do notary, and Francois was educated under the Jesuits in the College Louis-le-Grand. He began writing verse early, and was noted for his freedom of speech, a tendency which led to his being twice exiled from Paris and twice imprisoned in the Bastile. In 1726 he took refuge in England, and the two years spent there had great influence upon his later development. Some years after his return he became historiographer of France, and gentleman of the king's bedchamber; from 1750 to 1753 he lived at the court of Frederick the Great, with whom he ultimately quarreled; and he spent the last period of his life, from 1758 to 1778, on his estate of Ferney, near Geneva, where he produced much of his best work. He died at Paris, May 30, 1778. His writing includes a vast amount of work in almost every literary form, including 56 plays, dialogues, historical writing, stories and novels, poetry and epic poems, essays, scientific and learned papers, pamphlets, book reviews, and more than 20,000 letters. Voltaire is known for his philosophical writing, his great wit, and as a crusader against injustice, intolerance, cruelty, and war. In France, in the 1700's, he was the most outspoken writer who supported political and social reform. Because his writing criticized the King and the Church, he lived most of his life in constant fear of being jailed. Thus, he spent comparatively few years of his life in Paris, where his stay was either forbidden or too dangerous. Voltaire was the son of a notary. He attended the Jesuit College Louis-le-Grand from age 9 to age 17. After leaving school, his father found employment for him working in a law office, but Voltaire wished to devote himself to literature. He spent much of his time in Paris salons and became the wit of Parisian society.
