There's no one way to act, and every actor has his own method of how he gets into character and work. There are some standard techniques that most actors study at one point or another by which they base all their acting on. If you want to be an actor, you'll need to try several different techniques until you find the one you're most comfortable with and that is most effective for you. Based on the teachings of Lee Strasberg, method acting concentrates on the principles of sense memory, substitution and emotional memory. It encourages actors to take on the roles of their characters entirely and to remain in character beyond the term of the performance. In essence, the actor becomes the character and lives the day-to-day life as this other person, so the actor's reactions and actions begin to become natural and arise entirely from that character's motivations instead of written directions.     Extractions: RSS Feed Comments BellaLuce asked ‘What acting techniques/exercises have you found particularly pointless?’ Hmmm.  Acting Techniques and their exercises are necessary.  The trouble is that most of them are entirely pointless.  They do keep you occupied, they’re often fun, or least they make you feel like you’re working, or mostly, they frustrate and irritate you into complying with whatever the teacher says you’re meant to think/feel/do/pretend. We need technique.  The problem is that most of them are nonsense.  Acting teachers and Professors of Theatre don’t want you to know that, because it undermines most of their careers, and frankly, the way they earn their living. Sandy Meisner said that acting was ‘the ability to live truthfully under imaginary circumstances.  To me this is a good enough starting point for acting.  When I teach acting, I think of acting as something a little simpler.   Look at the person you’re meant to be speaking to and speak the lines with a similar intention to the character in the scene. However, any technique that doesn’t immediately make its use applicable to your work as an actor is suspect, not necessarily pointless but suspect.  It becomes pointless, when after a few hours of work reveal no positive benefits towards actually acting the damned scene.

Although he wrote extensively on the dramatic theory behind his work, some aspects are still vague. To understand it, we must evaluate his theatrical conventions and how they relate to both his writings and productions, whilst keeping in mind that Brecht's techniques were a by-product of his environment (see  Influences on Brecht section ). His theatre is best described as a dramatic vessel of rational didacticism, influenced by his Marxist beliefs. In order to incorporate Marxist theory in his works, Brecht devised various dramatic techniques to convey his message. Techniques such as the verfremdungsteffekt/alienation effect, didacticism, breaking the fourth wall, gestus, narration and use of song all encompass the Brechtian theorisation of Epic Theatre - a convention first founded by Irwin Piscator. Epic Theatre is the term used generally to describe Brecht's theory and technique. His plays were 'epic' in that the dramatic action was episodic - a disconnected montage of scenes, non-representational staging, and the 'alienation effect'. All elements contribute to Brecht's overall purpose which was to comment on the political, social and economic elements that affected the lives of his characters. In

Firstly there are some videos on what I refer to as 'Instant Presence', a series of tricks if you like, which can radically alter the way that your classes perceive you. I suggest that you read the sections on status before watching the videos as it is vital to get an understanding of what high status is and why you might want to use this acting technique to help you. The section section deals with presence in more general terms and focuses on the work of Patsy Rodenburg, who uses acting techniques and voice work with actors to create presence. Below is a short screencast that explains how I use acting techniques in the training courses that I run for new and experienced teachers . The programme that I used for these is called Jing and I highly recommend it! In my workshops, I try to get a before and after effect to show teachers the difference that using acting techniques to create a strong, high status persona can make. I focus on using high status language, such as the phrase 'you need to..' and I reinforce the idea of speaking 'slower and lower' as a general rule. Here's one short example. Patsy Rodenberg is currently the Director of Voice at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and until recently at the Royal National Theatre in London. In 2007, she wrote 'Presence', which aimed to apply acting techniques such as voice control to the general public.
