Professor Peter Shinnie, who has died aged 92, was one of the founders of African archeology. His professional career spanned 70 years, during which time he was an RAF pilot and intelligence officer, a member of the Communist and Scottish National parties, an administrator, an inspiring - if demanding - teacher, a pioneering researcher and a gifted writer. Born in London, the son of an Aberdonian doctor, he went to Westminster school and on to Christ Church, Oxford, to read Egyptology. His first exposure to archeology was at Maiden Castle, Dorset, with Mortimer Wheeler, as one of a number of gifted apprentice archaeologists - others including Stuart Piggott, J Desmond Clark, Beatrice de Cardi and Rachel Maxwell-Hyslop. At Oxford, he learned to fly with the university air squadron and was active in the university Communist club, whose members then included Denis Healey and Iris Murdoch. His intense undergraduate life - he also learned modern Greek - resulted in a third-class degree, but he stayed on at Oxford as a £3 a week CP organizer, and a temporary assistant at the Ashmolean Museum. He joined the RAF when war broke out, flying bombers, then serving in intelligence on air photography interpretation and finally in the battle for Athens, where he was tempted to stay on after the war. With peace he returned to the Ashmolean and spent a season working with Leonard Woolley on the Bronze age site at Tell el Atshana in Turkey, near the Syrian border. This gave him his first exposure to Arabic and helped him secure his first permanent job as assistant commissioner for archeology in the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. His boss was AJ Arkell, an authority on prehistoric Sudan. In the next 10 years Shinnie explored Nubian studies and started his work on Meroe, the literate civilization that scattered the Nile valley with pyramids and other impressive masonry. He succeeded Arkell as commissioner, set up the antiquities museum in Khartoum, founded the journal Kush, and was punctilious in writing up surveys and digs.

Blombos Cave is a Middle Stone Age (MSA) site located in the southern Cape, South Africa, that contains excellently preserved MSA deposits that date to older than 70,000 years. zSB(3,3) Boomplaas Cave (Tree Farm Cave) is located in the Swartberg Range of South Africa, near the southern most tip of the continent. Border Cave is a rockshelter in the Lembombo Mountains between South Africa and Swaziland, in Kwazulu Natal of South Africa. The Cave of Hearths is an Earlier Stone Age site in the Makapan Valley of South Africa. Most of the masks or figures for which West Africa is famous, however, were made for traditional religious practises. Many traditional West African religions centre on the belief in life after death and the belief that spirits of the deceased influence the living world. This influence is held not only over living relatives but also over the weather, crops, livestock, wild animals, and whole communities. It is, however, not only deceased ancestors who hold such influence but the gods who must also be appeased. People hold rituals to intercede with the spirit world to avert ill fortune and encourage prosperity. Being sacred and powerful these rituals are not for everyone to know about but only for a few chosen men (and very occasionally women) who are initiated into one of the ‘secret societies’. Members of these secret societies attempt to contact the gods and spirits of village ancestors through offerings, prayers, songs, dances and ‘plays’ known as masquerades. Elaborate shrines and statues made from metal, stone, or wood often play a part in such ceremonies. However, among the most common forms of ritual and religious art are the masks used in masquerades.

For a much wider range of paleontological and prehistoric fiction and non-fiction, visit the Prehistoric Fiction page by Steve Trussel Robert Sawyer's book Hominids , the first in the Neanderthal Parallax trilogy, was published in May 2002. Follow this link for more information , including sample chapters. Sawyer is a science fiction author who, in my opinion, writes consistently good books, so I expect this to be an enjoyable series. The second book in the series, Humans , was published in February 2003. The third book and last book in the series, Hybrids , will be published in September 2003. The caves are located in a rural area on the outskirts of Hargeisa , and contain some of the earliest known rock art in the Horn of Africa and the African continent in general. Laas Gaal's cave paintings are estimated to date back to somewhere between and BCE The Laas Geel site contains granite caves sheltering about ten rock alcoves decorated with Neolithic cave paintings. The caves are located outside Hargeisa , in an area encompassing a nomadic village, the Naasa Hablood hills. The site overlooks a wide district of countryside, where nomads graze their livestock and wild antelopes roam the vast landscape. The local nomads used the caves as a shelter when it rained and never paid much attention to the paintings. The site is now guarded by the local villagers and the Ministry of Tourism During November and December 2002, an archaeological survey was carried out by a French team in Somaliland. The reason for this was to search for rock shelters and caves containing stratified archaeological infills capable of documenting the period when production economy appeared in this part of the Horn of Africa (circa
