    Extractions: Spring Semester 1998 Benjamin Caleb Ray Course Description: Each student will design an exhibition of African art for presentation on the World Wide Web, incorporating the results of the student's study of African art. The exhibitions will contain an introductory explanation of the exhibit's theme, a map of Africa locating the societies whose art objects are represented, images of selected African art objects, relevant field-context images, descriptive labels, and other explanatory textual materials. The images students will use are taken from collections at the Bayly Museum of the University of Virginia , the Fowler Museum of Cultural History , the Hampton University Museum Monday and Wednesday classes will be devoted to illustrated lectures on African art; Friday computer lab sessions will be used for computer instruction, digital image processing, and Web page construction. The course includes the following curricular components: a brief history of African art studies; African ritual and cosmology; analysis of African art exhibition catalogues; library research on selected art objects; the exhibition of African art in museum contexts; training in Web skills and image processing. The special challenge of the course is to create exhibitions of African art that attempt to be true to the objects themselves while placing images of them in a cultural environment of educational value to the exhibitor and the viewer alike.

    Extractions: Web African Art African art and African artists evolved differently than their Western counterparts so much so that only very few pieces of African art bear the individual style of their artists. Even when African artists were commissioned to create particular artworks for a king or tribal leader, they still had to abide by certain traditions thus not allowing them to develop much of a personal style. Now they didn’t just copy designs from each other, every piece of art was a unique since it was made by human hands, but within certain tribal rules or traditions. However, despite this, African artists still managed to express their imagination by developing new techniques and if a new technique was superior to an old one then it would become part of the tradition very quickly. Another important difference between the African art and the Western one is the fact that most of African art was created with some sort of religious or spiritual purpose in mind. African art has to do with deep meanings of magic, especially when it comes to celebrating certain events or one’s ancestors. African artists created certain pieces of art in order to celebrate the important moments in one’s life, like one’s marriage or one’s funeral. While in the West artists valued art because of its intrinsic beauty, African artists put much more of a value on the meaning of certain forms, shapes and arrangements on each piece of art. African sculptors would only rarely create something just for the sake of creating something beautiful, pretty much everything he or she does has a purpose and function that usually has little to do with its beauty.

You can maybe see the traditional Thai Naga (river serpent) in the arms of the chair and the table; and though I've never been to South Africa (I have been to Senegal and the Gambia), you can see the Zulu shield (tank tread) motif on the back of the chair. I work from scratch. All are one off (except for the laser cut tables, there are three). Some boxes are designed on a Cad program.
