   Extractions: History: Islam and the Arabs The first Arab military expeditions into the Maghrib, between 642 and 669, resulted in the spread of Islam . The Umayyads (a Muslim dynasty based in Damascus from 661 to 750) recognized that the strategic necessity of dominating the Mediterranean dictated a concerted military effort on the North African front. By 711 Umayyad forces helped by Berber converts to Islam This period was marked by constant conflict, political instability, and economic decline. Following a large incursion of Arab bedouin from Egypt beginning in the first half of the eleventh century, the use of Arabic spread to the countryside, and sedentary Berbers were gradually Arabized. The Almoravid movement developed early in the eleventh century among the Sanhaja Berbers Like the Almoravids, the Almohads zenith of Almohad power occurred between 1163 and 1199. For the first time, the Maghrib was united under a local regime, but the continuing wars in Spain overtaxed the resources of the Almohads, and in the Maghrib their position was compromised by factional strife and a renewal of tribal warfare.

The other significant historical event in the history of Algeria and it’s people was the colonialism period, during which the French owned the land which today comprises the country. This period lasted from around 1848, up until Algeria gained its independence in 1962. This period of time during the French imperialist rule over Algeria had a great impact in shaping the culture and politics of the country. French is the second most spoken language in Algeria, second to Arabic, which is the national language. Algeria has close economic and cultural ties to France, as it is their number one trade partner as well as the source of Algeria’s national culture. The basis for Algeria’s current state was laid by French imperialists who conquered the area after they signed the Berlin treaty in the 19
