Essentially apolitical, the traditional almanac evolved in the early days of the French Revolution, when rev olutionaries and counter-revolutionaries used this medium to describe the stormy period. The almanac had become political; ever since the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte, every regime used this influential medium to foster its goals. Republican almanacs were banned up until the July Monarchy. The political almanac published annually since the end of the 1830s and sold at extremely low prices, compared to newspaper and book prices, they could reach large segments of urban and rural populations not at all familiar with political literature. In printing their little books, monarchist, republican and Bonapartist almanac editors competed with the superstitions and tall tales of traditional almanacs that lulled the masses. Considered initially under the July Monarchy as a means of educating the masses politically and increasing their awareness, the almanac became the principal weapon in disputes between monarchists, republicans and bonapartists during the Second Empire. Because of the electoral potential of universal suffrage extended to males during the February 1848 revolution, each political party tried to mobilize mass support at each legislative election. Freedom of the press also encouraged the publication of almanacs.

Seriously utilitarian and scientific, the Harvard Philomaths (1639-1692) produced almanacs whose information was primarily astronomical, navigational, and calendrical. Not until the almanac had become a customary form in colonial New England do we encounter the first example of its humor. This humor, playing on the almanac’s form, relied on New England colonial prejudice. Since 1973 the Church Almanac has printed only information pertaining to the Church. Orson Pratt, an apostle, published the first Mormon almanacs in New York City in 1845 and 1846. Basing his Prophetic Almanac for 1845 on standard American almanacs, Elder Pratt added a few articles about doctrines of the Church. Then his 1846 issue broke from the standard mold and became a distinctively Mormon almanac. Between 1851 and 1866, William Wine Phelps published fourteen known issues of Deseret Almanac (from 1859-1864 entitled Almanac) in Salt Lake City. Also borrowing from standard almanacs, he added religious and cultural articles and some notes pertaining to frontier-society needs. The current Deseret News Church Almanac is prepared and edited by the staff of the church news, in cooperation with the Historical Department of the Church. It was published annually from 1974 to 1983, but biennially thereafter. Presently it is a 352-page, soft-bound, ready-reference of facts and statistics of the Church. It is intended for use in libraries, schools, and other institutions, as well as private homes. The Almanac prints thousands of historical and contemporary items about the Church, such as brief biographical sketches of all past and present General Authorities; a year-by-year historical chronology of the Church since the 1820s; a month-by-month chronology of major events in the Church during the past two years; and past and current information about stakes, missions, areas, and temples throughout the world, including histories, populations, and numbers of Church units.

The two may be distinguished in that tables contain dates in the Long Count calendar, whereas almanacs generally only record tzolk'in dates (see Glossary for a definition of terms). The Madrid Codex is composed entirely of almanacs, meaning that there are no Long Count dates in the manuscript that allow it to be placed in absolute time. This is in contrast to the Dresden Codex, which contains a series of tables referencing astronomical events such as eclipse cycles and the appearance and disappearance of Venus in the sky, as well as seasonal cycles (solstices and equinoxes). For an agriculturally-based society like the Maya, tracking seasonal events was extremely important. Although Long Count dates are not found in the Madrid Codex, seasonal and astronomical references occur in a number of almanacs. These data can, according to a methodology developed by Victoria and Harvey Bricker, be used to date the almanacs containing these types of references in real or absolute time. Their model of how almanacs functioned differs significantly from the traditional interpretation of almanacs as instruments for divination and prophecy within the tzolk'in calendar that remain unanchored in real time. Another model, recently formulated by Gabrielle Vail, provides a further challenge to the traditional interpretation of the structure and function of codical almanacs.

In a pre-Information Age, an almanac provided a guide to every-day life, but they continue to be published up to the present time, and reflect in appearance and content their eighteenth- and nineteenth-century forerunners. The first German-American almanac to appear in the Ohio Valley was printed in Cincinnati: Teutscher Calendar auf 1808 , and many were published and marketed in the Greater Cincinnati area, which became one of the major German-American press centers along with St. Louis and Milwaukee. Often overlooked as ephemera and not collected by libraries, almanacs are a valuable source of information providing insight into German-American family life. Not surprisingly, the almanac became a basic guidebook throughout the year for the German-American household, and one of the best selections of them can be found in the German-Americana Collection at the University of Cincinnati.
