In 1776, the American patriots in the 13 Colonies were at war with Great Britain. England ruled the 13 colonies. King George III of England passed several acts (laws) that seemed unfair to the colonists. The colonists called these the Intolerable Acts, because they believed that the acts were impossible to tolerate (live with). Most of the acts made the colonists pay higher taxes for exports (things sent) from Great Britain. The Wool Act, Molasses Act, the Sugar Act, the Iron Act and the Tea Act set high tariffs (taxes) on these items. The acts also made it illegal for the colonists to import (bring in) from any other country but England. The acts were designed to give England a monopoly (control of trade) over these exports. The colonists either had to pay the high taxes or do without the exports. King George III also passed the Quartering Act which said that the colonists had to house and feed the British soldiers sent to police the colonists. The Stamp Act made colonists pay for an imperial British seal on all printed material.
