Extractions: Home Crafts Kids Crafts ... Arbor Day Crafts By Drea Christopher eHow Contributor updated: September 25, 2009 I want to do this! What's This? United States Secretary of Agriculture J. Sterling Morton created Arbor Day in 1872 as a way to improve Nebraska's appearance by planting additional trees. Celebrated annually on the last Friday of April, Arbor Day now serves as a national reminder to plant and care for trees. Help your kids discover the spirit of Arbor Day with themed crafts that focus on the annual event. Let the kids create leaf artwork to frame as seasonal wall decor. Gather an assortment of real leaves. Have the children press the foliage onto an ink pad or a paper plate coated with a thin layer of paint. Push the leaf onto a piece of paper, smoothing it carefully to produce a complete leaf impression. Repeat the process using different types of leaves and ink colors. If younger kids find it difficult to stamp with the delicate leaves, let them make impressions with washable paint and kitchen sponges cut into leaf shapes or leaf-shaped foam stamps sold at craft or scrap booking stores. Organize Arbor Day crafts that the entire family can enjoy. Give each person a terracotta or plastic pot and an assortment of craft supplies like washable paints, pine cone stickers and self-adhesive foam shapes like flowers and leaves. Create colorful, customized designs on the pots. Once the artwork dries, plant tree saplings or plants inside the pots or use the containers to hold pencils, trinkets and souvenirs.
