   Extractions: When the War of Paraguay (1865-1870) ended (a war in which the alliance of Argentina with Uruguay and Brazil was named the Triple Alliance), the country began a stage of economic growth based on the export of livestock and agricultural products. This took place in a political background characterized by a long-awaited calm, which was crowned by a triumph: the federalization of Buenos Aires in 1880. The advent of modernity in the country brought new values and its own problems. Thus, for instance, there was a rise of new social sectors: the working classes, the industrial bourgeoisie and the middle classes, with the addition of large quantities of European (mostly Italian and Spanish) immigrants. Democracy supervised the whole process although sometimes circumstances and governments had little to do with democratic policies. The confrontation between conservatives and radicals marked this stage, until, in 1930, the government came to a violent end due to a coup d'état led by General José Félix Uriburu. Since then, institutional instability and the alternation of civil and military governments marked the political situation of the country. The crisis also impinged on economy and confrontations between the agricultural and livestock sectors and industrialists had a leading role in the disruption of stability.

General José de San Martín , organized the armies that defeated the royalists and contributed decively to the independence of Chile and Peru. Peace was restored in 1820, but the central issue, formation of a stable government, remained unresolved. Throughout most of the following decade a state of anarchy, further compounded by war with Brazil from 1825 to 1827, prevailed in the United Provinces. Brazil was defeated in the conflict, a result of rival claims to Uruguay, which emerged as an independent state. The national political turmoil lessened appreciably after the 1829 election of General Juan Manuel de Rosas as governor of Buenos Aires Province . A federalist, Rosas cemented friendly relations with other provinces, thereby winning broad popular support. He rapidly extended his authority over the United Provinces which became known as the Argentine Confederation, and during his rule all opposition groups were crushed or driven underground.

Civilian rule was generally peaceful and stable until a military coup in 1930. Another coup occurred in 1943, after which Juan Domingo Perón, a key figure in the coup, emerged as the country's leader. He encouraged the growth of labour unions and raised wages, and in 1946 he was elected president. Perón and his wife, Eva ( Evita ) , who was a champion of social welfare programmes, were immensely popular among the masses, but as the economy deteriorated Perón became increasingly autocratic. His efforts to secularize the nation brought him into conflict with the Roman Catholic Church and alienated his military officers; he was overthrown in 1955. After a series of military governments , Perón was allowed to return to power in 1973, but he died in 1974, leaving his second wife, Isabel, who had no political experience, as the first woman to head a national government in the western hemisphere. During her time in office, Marxist revolutionaries called Montonero, engaged in a violent guerrilla campaign, which led the military to take power in 1976. The army then embarked upon its own "dirty war" against those it considered subversive; thousands were murdered or disappeared.

Centralist and federationist groups were in conflict, until national unity was established and the Constitution promulgated in 1853. In the 1880s the "Conquest of the Desert" subdued or exterminated the remaining native tribes throughout Patagonia. From 1880 to 1930 Argentina became one of the ten wealthiest nations. Conservative forces dominated Argentine politics until 1916, when their traditional rivals, the Radicals, won control of the government. The military forced Hipolito Yrigoyen from power in 1930 leading to another decade of Conservative rule. Political change led to the presidency of Juan Domingo Perón in 1946, who aimed at empowering the working class and greatly expanded the number of unionised workers. The city was given its name in honor of the patron saint of sailors, Virgin of Buen Ayre. At that point the so called city was a tiny hamlet of about 500 people. For most of the Colonial period, Buenos Aires remained out of the spotlight unlike the major port of Cartagena in Colombia or the gold mining towns of Peru and Bolivia. By the early 1800s the city's population grew to 7,500, but the city remained a quiet town outside most of the action. The city mainly survived by smuggling and illegal trade of the goods that did come in and out of it's port. The people of Buenos Aires came to be called portenos, or people of the port. Argentina and Buenos Aires started to develop their own identity with the English invasions that started in 1806. The city was easily conquered by English general Beresford with only 1500 soldiers. But the victory was short lived because in a mere 6 weeks, Juan Martin Pueyrredon trained an army of 12,000 soldiers and reconquered Buenos Aires. The English persisted and sent another 8,500 soldiers in 1807. The English made a terrible decision of trying to capture the city without damaging it and so not using artillery in their attack. The English soldiers marched into the city only to be defeated by the inhabitants dropping stones and boiling water on the heads of the invaders.

Photos Argentina - History The first signs of human presence in Argentina are located in the Patagonia (Piedra Museo, Santa Cruz), and date from 11,000 BC. Around 1 AD, several maize-based civilizations developed in the Andean region (Santa María, Huarpes, Diaguitas, Sanavirones, among others). In 1480, the Inca Empire under the rule of emperor Pachacutec launched an offensive and conquered present-day northwestern Argentina, integrating it into a region called Collasuyu. In the northeastern area, the Guaraní developed a culture based on yuca and sweet potato. The central and southern areas (Pampas and Patagonia) were dominated by nomadic cultures, unified in the seventeenth century by the Mapuches. In 1806 and 1807 the British Empire launched two invasions to Buenos Aires, but the creole population repelled both attempts. On May 25, 1810, after confirmation of the rumors about the overthrow of King Ferdinand VII by Napoleon, citizens of Buenos Aires took advantage of the situation and created the First Government Junta (May Revolution). Formal independence from Spain was declared on July 9, 1816 in Tucumán.
