INTRODUCTION The phrase "civil rights movement" evokes the powerful words and images of the mass movement by Black Americans in the United States during the 1950s and 1960s. In recent years, however, Asian Americans have increasingly laid claim to a place in the history of the struggle for civil rights. Just as Derrick Bell harkens back to Dred Scott v. Sanford(1) as the first of the "leading cases" in civil rights,(2) Hyung-Chan Kim's anthology of Asian-American civil rights cases and essays recalls cases such as Yick Wo v. Hopkins(3) as proof of Asian Americans' longstanding participation in the development of civil rights law in the United States.(4) Although existing legal scholarship on the black/white paradigm generally assumes the paradigm to be a biracial model of racism that focuses exclusively on the relationship between Black and White Americans,(8) an explicit definition is rare and difficult to find.(9) The dearth of legal scholarship that endeavors to outline the contours of the black/white paradigm is problematic not only because the inadequacy of the paradigm is an often unexplored and unchallenged assumption, but also because the assumption may be incorrect or misleading.

The murder generated public outrage over the lenient sentencing the two men originally received in a plea bargain , as the attack, which included blows to the head from a baseball bat , possessed many attributes consistent with hate crimes . Many of the layoffs in Detroit's auto industry, including Nitz's in 1979, had been due to the increasing market share of Japanese automakers, leading to allegations that Chinese American Vincent Chin received racially charged comments before his death. Patrick Okura, 93, a psychologist who was among the 120,000 Japanese Americans interned during World War II and who later established a foundation for developing Asian-Pacific American leaders in the mental health field, died Jan. 30 of coronary artery disease at his home in Bethesda. Mr. Okura and his wife, Lily, were among the 60,000 surviving Japanese Americans who in 1990 each received a $20,000 check and a written apology from President George H.W. Bush under the 1988 Civil Liberties Act. They used the money to further their efforts to educate Asian American mental health and human services professionals in how mental health services and policies are developed.

Extractions: Duke Kahanamoku came to be known as the father of international surfing, but the Hawaiian native made his first splash as a swimmer at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden. Born in Honolulu in 1890, Kahanamoku struck gold by setting a world record in the 100-meter free-style and earned a silver medal in the 200-meter relay. He won two more golds at the 1920 Antwerp Olympics, a silver at the 1924 Paris Olympics, and a bronze at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. Kahanamoku's swimming and surfing talents caught the attention of Hollywood, and over the course of nine years, he appeared in nearly 30 movies. Kahanamoku went on to serve as sheriff for the City and County of Honolulu for 26 years. The conference will be held in Los Angeles. It will be the largest gathering of advocates and community leaders from the AAPI community to share, network, mentor, and address the major policy issues facing our nation today. The Advancing Justice Conference is a joint project by the Asian American Institute (Chicago), Asian American Justice Center (Washington, D.C.), Asian Law Caucus (San Francisco), and the Asian Pacific American Legal Center of Southern California (Los Angeles).
