Extractions: Asian Art The Museum’s Asian art collection started with a gift of Chinese textiles in 1951 and today, with more than 4,000 objects, is the largest and most comprehensive in the Southeast. The collection hails from China Korea Japan , India, and Southeast Asia, and features the finest collection of Vietnamese ceramics in the U.S., as well as outstanding examples of Buddhist and Hindu art, lacquer ware, ceramics, paintings, prints, and sculpture. Highlights include a rare Ming dynasty temple wall and Tang dynasty tomb figures from China; Jomon period pottery from Japan; and contemporary works such as “The Grand Residence,” considered by Chinese painter Wu Guanzhong among his most important works. Also, on long-term loan from The Smithsonian Institution is the Vetlesen Jade Collection of 16 th - to 19 th -century pieces, one of the most important jade collections in the U.S. The Museum has the only gallery for Korean art in the Southeast.

Extractions: On July 15, 1996, thirteen students from Sauk Valley Community College, four student facilitators, Dr. George Karnezis, and myself traveled to Chicago to view two of the sites belonging to a project called SculptureChicago. The trip turned out for all to be extremely rich in experiences, experiences redolent with both multivocality and nuance. However, for a long time I had felt dissatisfied with the Art Institute trip. I was becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the fact that this particular experience, no matter how I chose to talk about it or warn against certain views, still reinforced the ideas that art was done by others ("creative geniuses"), that the value of art was institution-bound, and that all public activities had gift shops attached to them. Regardless of the spirited discussions we would have in class making connections between the enormous prices that some paintings fetched and the astronomical salaries received by sports figures, or about the rather one-sided representation of white males in the art world, or about the debilitating Art-in-a-box syndrome, here I was implicitly giving credence to just such ideas by honoring the experience of going to the Art Institute.

Extractions: Asian Art Representing a massive continent, the term "Asian Art" describes a vast variety of art forms produced by people of many different cultures. The artwork of Southeast Asia for example is much different than art found in Korea or Japan because of its own unique history and environment, but is often grouped together because of its distinctly non western characteristics. Because of the great geographical and cultural gap between Asia and the west, new and interesting variations on architecture and artwork developed uninterrupted by western influence in any notable way until the Early Modern age. Generally Asian art is noted for its beautiful use of the script from the various languages as well as their advanced use of paper and their beautiful production of pottery and statues. Asian art has had a significant impact on the course of western art, specifically the art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Artists such as Van Gough exhibited a deep fascination with the artwork of the continent, often representing typical Asian motifs. The art of Asia today has captivated collectors. Contemporary Chinese artists, for example, have produced new and innovative works commenting on the Communist regime that have sold for record prices at auction. Many artists of the continent have embraced the earth friendly movement and brought much needed attention to the global environmental crisis.

Extractions: I got back from Fame Festival in Southern Italy last week, after spending a few days making installations around the city. I made six in all, including a few that used miniature speakers and mp3 players to add sound. The one above had a speaker hidden in the drain that played sounds of screaming kids and splashing - check out the video below. I will be posting more soon, including a video showing the reactions of Grottaglie's residents to one of the sound installations. I will also be releasing a mini print from the festival in a week or so. In the mean time, check out more work from the festival here - as usual a bunch of great artists including Swoon, Blu and Boris Ozpetek. The Fame Festival show opens it's doors on the 25th September.
