Until recently, astronauts were sponsored and trained exclusively by governments, either by the military or by civilian space agencies. However, with the first sub-orbital flight of the privately-funded SpaceShipOne in 2004, a new category of astronaut was created - the commercial astronaut While the term astronaut is sometimes applied to anyone who travels into space, including scientists, politicians, journalists, and tourists, this article only lists professional astronauts. A list of everyone who has flown in space can be found at List of space travelers by name As of 2008, more than 480 people had trained as astronauts.

Extractions: NASA Public Affairs Office Getting the Shuttle-Mir story out to the public was an interesting story all in itself. On the one hand, NASA’s Public Affairs Office had an institutional tradition going back to the Project Mercury days of the late 1950s and early 1960s of providing timely information and access to the international news media. Every U.S. human space launch had been televised - live. On the other hand at the time of Shuttle-Mir, the Russian space program was just emerging from the Soviet era of strictly controlled information. It had neither the tradition nor all the needed physical capabilities for providing for the functioning of a "free press." Over time, the U.S. and Russian public affairs officials developed a good working relationship and mutual respect. In particular, the two 1997 contingencies of the Mir fire and the Progress collision actually helped to improve and expand openness and cooperation. In some ways, the media’s access to Moscow operations became more open than their access to operations in Houston. NASA placed Public Affairs representatives on a rotating basis at Mission Control Center-Moscow (MCC-Moscow) for Thagard’s 105-day Mir mission (March 16-June 29, 1995). When

Extractions: This year's Space Art Forum will be around a specific theme: performances and objects that could be made for different states of gravity, such as earth orbit or parabolic flight (see below). Dancers, choreographers, circus and theatre practitioners are welcome as well as visual artists. Scientists and engineers involved in space and interested in these ideas are also invited to speak about their work. A parabolic flight creates the conditions of zero gravity - otherwise only experienced for any length of time in orbit or space travel - by putting an aircraft into a series of diving manoeuvres. Parabolic flights require a specially adapted aircraft and a highly specialised team of flight crew, trained instructors and doctors. They are undertaken by a handful of space agencies around the world specifically for astronaut/cosmonaut training and scientific experiments. During each parabola, bodies and objects inside the aircraft float freely for 25 - 30 seconds. A flight will have between 10 and 30 parabolas. Many people experience severe discomfort in zero gravity - nausea, disorientation and sickness are common. But it is becoming feasible for artistic activities to take place in this environment and we will be focusing on these in this forum.

Extractions: The Arts Catalyst, the science-art agency, invites proposals from London and Moscow artists to develop experimental projects in zero gravity, double gravity or changing gravities on a 'parabolic flight' (diving aircraft) with the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre, Star City, Russia, probably in late September 2001. On this occasion, funding has been provided for London and Russian artists only. One of the most fascinating aspects of manned space flight is the state of zero gravity or weightlessness: astronauts and objects floating in air. But it is only recently that this extraordinary 'by-product' of the space programme has been recognised as a rich scientific resource, with a multitude of experiments - from human physiology to fluid physics - queuing up for the space agencies' parabolic flight programmes and for the new International Space Station. To date, the aesthetic possibilities of zero gravity have barely been explored, in part due to the exclusiveness of the environment, accessible only to astronauts and scientists. In recent years, a small handful of artists have managed, through negotiations with international space agencies, to access the restricted environment of parabolic 'zero gravity' flights - the only way to achieve weightlessness for a significant duration within the Earth's atmosphere. The Arts Catalyst is now able to offer this opportunity to other artists through their relationship with the Yuri Gagarin Centre.
