One of eleven research institutes within the University of Hawaii it has a total staff of over 200, including about 45 faculty. The Institute has an annual budget of $20m, including $15m in grants from the federal government. The Institute for Astronomy is one of the world's leading astronomical research centers. Its broad-based program includes studies of the Sun, planets, and stars, as well as interstellar matter, galaxies, and cosmology. Most IfA astronomers use the giant telescopes atop Mauna Kea and Haleakala to collect faint visible light, and infrared and submillimeter radiation from distant objects. They also use and support space observatories, such as the Hubble Space Telescope and Chandra (an X-ray astronomy satellite), to make observations that cannot be made from the ground.

Around 170 academics, postdocs, visitors and assistant staff work at the department. Research at the department is made in a number of scientific areas, including stars , star clusters, cosmology , the high- redshift universe, AGN galaxies and galaxy clusters . This is a mixture of observational astronomy, over the entire electromagnetic spectrum, computational theoretical astronomy, and analytic theoretical research. The Kavli Institute for Cosmology is also located on the department site. This Institute has an emphasis on The Universe at High Redshifts . Set on a mountain on an Atlantic island, far enough from human habitation to get a clear view of the night sky, the Great Canary Telescope carries with it the hopes of scientists who believe clues to understanding our world can be found in as yet unseen parts of the universe. The telescope will, in effect, peer back in time as it picks up light emitted long ago in other parts of the universe. A powerful array of 36 separate mirrors form a single mirror that is 10.4 metres (34ft) wide, 4% larger than the Keck telescopes at Mauna Kea, Hawaii. The GTC's powerful eye will penetrate dense, cold molecular "clouds" to watch stars being born and will seek out the most distant galaxies and quasars.

Extractions: Our independent research group has been established in May 2007 within the framework of the Excellence Initiative by the German Research Foundation (DFG) as part of the Heidelberg Graduate School of Fundamental Physics . It focuses on the origin of the various galaxy types that we see in the Universe today. These include the types that are described by the famous Hubble-sequence, but also the smaller dwarf galaxies, which constitute the most numerous type of galaxies in the Universe. We aim at understanding the characteristics of these galaxies, their evolution, and the processes that gave them their present-day appearance. To this end, several local collaborations have already been established, in order to benefit from the wide-ranging expertise among the different Heidelberg astronomy institutes. Deep space-based imaging surveys like the Hubble Ultra Deep Field reveal a variety of distant galaxies that can hardly be described by standard classification schemes: many objects consist of several bright clumps, are highly distorted, or appear to be galaxy pairs in a phase of heavy interaction. Some of these might end up as massive elliptical galaxies, while others might form spiral galaxies like our Milky Way. We thus need to bridge the gap between the distant, younger galaxies and the nearby, further evolved ones, in order to understand the mechanisms that shape them.
