The second "a" in his last name was added in 1937, when he grew tired of people mispronouncing his last name. Accepted to West Point in 1910, he earned the nickname "Tooey" due to his resemblance to fellow cadet F.J. Toohey. Graduating in 1914, Spaatz was initially assigned to the 25th Infantry at Schofield Barracks, HI as a second lieutenant. Arriving in October 1914, he remained with the unit for a year before being accepted into aviation training. Traveling to San Diego, he attended the Aviation School and graduated on May 15, 1916. LeMay Photograph Courtesy of the US Air Force zSB(3,3) Born to Erving and Arizona LeMay on November 15, 1906, Curtis Emerson LeMay was raised in Columbus, OH. Raised in his home town, LeMay later attended Ohio State University where he studied civil engineering and was a member of the National Society of Pershing Rifles. In 1928, after graduating, he joined the US Army Air Corps as a flying cadet and was sent to Kelly Field, TX for flight training. The following year, received his commission as a second lieutenant in the Army Reserve after passing through a ROTC program. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the regular army in 1930. First assigned to the 27th Pursuit Squadron at Selfridge Field, MI, LeMay spent the next seven years in fighter assignments until he was transferred to bombers in 1937.
