Nowhere is this more of a concern than near our schools. When the new school year starts on August 24, all motorists share the responsibility of making sure students arrive safely. Drivers should slow down in neighborhoods where children are walking, riding bikes or waiting for the bus. They should obey school zone speed limits and know when to stop for school buses. State law requires approaching drivers to stop when a school bus is stopped and operating red flashing lights or an extended stop sign. Drivers should not proceed until the school bus resumes motion; the driver is signaled by the bus driver to proceed; or the visual signal is no longer activated. A driver does not have to stop for a school bus if the roadway is separated by a median or other physical barrier. If a roadway is divided only by a left-turning lane, but not separated by a median, then drivers must stop for school buses. Drivers who do not stop for school buses face a fine of up to $1,000. If a driver is convicted of this offense more than once, the state can suspend their license. Parents, please remind your children about the dangers of talking to, or taking rides from, strangers. For those children who walk to and from school, develop a preplanned route you both know ahead of time. Once you have an established route, develop a Plan B to be used only in cases of construction or other circumstances where their normal route is interrupted.

Students may not always be focusing on traffic safety and motorists are encouraged to slow down and be extra cautious. Drivers are also reminded that school buses will be back on the roads making frequent stops. Failing to stop for a school bus with red lights activated puts students at extreme risk and the offence carries a fine of $490.00 and six demerit points. The Owen Sound Police Service will be focusing their traffic safety efforts on enforcement and education in school areas. This will include speeding, aggressive driving as well as illegal parking in the area of schools. Parking in prohibited areas around schools can create safety hazards by impeding bus drop-off areas and limiting driver and pedestrian visibility at school crossings. The Owen Sound Police is also encouraging citizens to enjoy their Labour Day weekend responsibly. The Owen Sound Police will be conducting R.I.D.E. spot checks at various times and locations throughout the Labour Day weekend.

Extractions: [Portland Fire Department] Back To School Safety By John Beatty Fire and Life Safety Educator III Maine Fire Training and Education Southern Maine Community College I know that I’m wondering where the summer went, how about you? It seems that whenever I wanted to do anything-it rained. Because of the rain my grass is greener but also taller and I spent a great deal of time trying to keep it under control. Oh and by the way I’m losing the battle. Just like me you are all wondering where the time has gone, and to think that in just a few weeks school will be starting up again. For those of us that are parents, it’s back to school shopping, getting the kids ready for a new sleep schedule and listening to “but I don’t want to go back to school”. But for all of us, whether we have children that are returning to school or not, it’s time to think about back to school safety. Use this checklist to prepare your children for a safe school year. Make sure your child knows his or her telephone number and address as well as 911 for an emergency. Plan a walking route to the bus stop with your child. Choose the most direct route, test it with them and tell them not to talk to strangers of any sort.
