Charter Without a doubt, the great attraction of Belize is its coral reef, nevertheless, this does not mean that the country does not have a strong culture rooted in its people. The strongest cultural influence came from the great Mayan civilization which existed fro centuries in Central America., leaving its rich and fascinating monuments and pyramids, not only for its descendants to visit and explore, but also for tourists from around the world. During the classical period of the Mayan Empire, the primary ceremonial center was the Altun Ha. Between the years, 1000 B.C. and 1400 A.D., it was an important city and also the commercial hub connecting the other interior and coastal Mayan centers. The temple to the sun god was also located there. The ruins of Altun Ha consisted of two principal courtyards with thirteen temples and some residential structures. Archeological evidence indicates that the Mayans established themselves in Altun Ha. from 200 B.C., with various stages of reoccupation until the fourteenth century.

Due to racial harmony and religious tolerance, all of these different elements have mixed and blended successfully, and Belize has gained a widespread reputation for its friendly peoples. One of the most prominent ethnic group is the Creoles, which formed 30% of the population in 2001. Creoles are descendants of the intermingling of the early British settlers with African slaves.More than 40% of the population are Mestizos. They are descendants of mixed blood Mexicans and Yucatec Mayans who fled from Yucatan in the mid 1800's. Another 6.6% of Belize's population are the Garifuna. The Garifuna have their own language and culture. Creoles The Creoles are descendants of British settlers and African slaves and can be more recognized by their values and way of life rather than by a biological manner. Two thirds of the Creole population reside in Belize City. Creole men,even after slavery, dominated positions in in logging crews, and even now dominate civil service. Garifuna The Garinagu came to Belize from the Bay Islands of Honduras on 19th November 1802. They are the result of the intermingling of African slaves, Carib and Arawak Indians.

For this reason, visitors to Belize will hear a variety of different languages being spoken, with English being the primary language spoken followed by Spanish. The diversity of the culture of Belize is reflected in the wide array of culinary choices. The food in the country ranges from spicy to cool, and many of the dishes are savory and rich, made with local game that can be found ranging the plains and forests that cover the land. When you add to the local dishes those from neighboring Central American countries and international cuisine such as Chinese and Nigerian, you get a very large selection to choose from. Of course, there are American and European dishes for those who are not quite as adventurous when it comes to their food, as well as Belizean Indian recipes to try. The country is so ethnically diverse that it enjoys racial harmony as well as religious tolerance. Because of this, the country has developed a reputation for being welcoming and friendly, inviting visitors to its shores with open arms. San Ignacio town is a former logging town where the Macal River was used to float logs all the way to Belize City. Extractions: Mestizo refers to the mixture of Spanish and Maya. They are immigrants who fled the ravages of war as as result of the Guerra de las Castas. The first group began to move into northern Belize around the 1850's. The northern refugees who settled in Corozal, Orange Walk, Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker were at first only Mestizoes but later were joined by many Maya immigrants. These were the people who developed agriculture, especiall sugar cane production on a large scale. Apart from language and cultural religious traditions such as the novena, posada, fiestas and los finados,the Mestizo culture was unique in its regard for close family ties with strict rules of courtship and marriage.Mestizo food is actually a mix of Maya and Spanish cuisine with corn playing a major role: tortillas, tamales, bollos, tamalitos, panades, garnachas along with other tasty foods such as relleno negro, chilmole, and escabeche. Another aspect of Mestizo culture is the fiesta Carnival presently being revived in Orange Walk district. Carnival season would be ushered in by a dance called "Los Mascarados". This dance involves a group of men in different disguises who would march through the streets dgragging chains. Some would be dressed like old men and women, while others masqueraded as witches, ghosts, demons, and others disguised themselves as priests in black cassocks with one man impersonating the devil. Other groups of 6 feet women would sometimes dress in Sunday satin all shiny, whole men sometimes stuck to simple white trousers, with white long-sleeved shirts, red neckerchiefs and sombreros.
