NASA / WMAP Science Team In 1965, the first direct experimental evidence of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation was detected by two scientists at Bell Telephone Laboratories, who were working with a microwave telescope for a completely different project. This image is a simulated graphic of what their 1965 equipment would have detected if they had conducted a systemic scan of the universe. The cosmic microwave background radiation - a thermal remnant from the aftermath of the big bang - was first proposed in 1948 by Big Bang supporter George Gamow, Ralph Alpher, and Robert Herman (although previous flawed estimates of space's temperature had already been calculated). Their estimates ultimately predicted a value of the cosmic microwave background radiation around 28 degrees Kelvin. These discoveries eventually fell out of popularity among physicists, although in the 1960s they were rediscovered by some physicists, including Robert Dicke. Over the years, various projects have re-measured the CMB with greater accuracy, such as the WMAP project and the Planck Telescope.
