Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue A small avian rescue organization dedicated to rescuing small Parrot-type birds. Located in the San Francisco Peninsula area. http://www.mickaboo.org/
Extractions: Check out the Mickaboo store! Mickaboo is sad to report that one of our technical leads, Mal Raff, has lost his battle with brain cancer on November 3. Mal was many wonderful things to many people. To us, he was a kind-hearted, patient and brilliant man. He had many talents and utilized them all to help make the world a better place for our birds, and for the people around him. On behalf of Mickaboo, we hope you have your own set of wings now, Mal. Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization based in Northern California. We take in birds that need a safe place to live, rehabilitate them if necessary, and find them good homes. We also try to educate people how to live with companion birds and inform them of the level of care necessary to provide the birds a safe, healthy, permanent home. Because we have no central facility, no single refuge, we need a foster home for each bird that we take in. And like most animal rescues in the United States, we are being asked to take a growing number of birds, including strays and birds surrendered to animal shelters, birds abandoned in homes due to foreclosure, and birds whose families can no longer care for them due to unforeseen circumstances. In many cases, birds are brought to us because their families cannot pay for desperately-needed veterinary care.

Extractions: Don and I have been breeding birds since 1980. As you can see, I have been a bird lover for a really long time. This picture was taken in 1953! We work hard to do things right and consider it a labor of love since we enjoy them so much. We started exhibiting at bird shows in 1984..took seven out of ten on the top bench, including Best in Show, at that first show, and don't you know we were hooked. We took many years to accumulate our breeding stock, selecting only the very best of each species. As a result our babies are of excellent quality. We never breed two birds just to produce more.. the goal is always to improve on their beauty and confirmation. I serve the hobby as an American Cockatiel Society Panel Judge. We breed many species of exotics including African Greys, Conures, Pionus, Cockatoos, Macaws, Quakers, Ringnecks and Amazons. Please check out our baby birds for sale. .you may find we have just the bird you are looking for. This list is updated frequently.

For me, recording a bird, using sound or photography, is much more satisfying than merely seeing it and marking it down on a list. I often find birds I know well as much of a thrill as birds I have never seen before, especially if I can capture a new pose. I would be most grateful for any help with the common or scientific names of any of the unidentified pictures. Burrowing owl

MAS: Education Projects/Activities Another arrangement that can be helpful is arranging birds by location or where the bird is found. The drawback here is birds move around and might be found in several different http://meckbirds.org/education/books.html
Extractions: Which Field Guide is Best? Birding field guides have to solve a complex problem. They need to be able to organize what is essentially visual information so users can identify a specific individual bird. This is not as easy as it sounds. So choosing a bird identification field guide can be as confusing and difficult as choosing binoculars. But with a little bit of information and forethought you can find one that meets your needs. Arrangement: Graphics: The second major consideration and most debated issue of field guides is the graphics. Graphics are essential to identifying a bird. They should clearly show the key field marks such as size, shape of the bill, color pattern, etc. The great debate is over whether photographs are better than illustrations As with the issue of arrangement both sides of the debate have pluses and minuses. Illustrations are a composite visual representation of a species. They have been created to show all of the critical field marks that will help identify a bird. You will probably never see a bird exactly like the illustration. Photographs on the other hand are visual representations of an individual bird within a species. The photo tries to convey the characteristic of the species but things like lighting, positioning and background may cause problems. All the field marks may not be visible. Usually a guide falls into one or the other category. One guide, however, has taken digital pictures and enhanced them so they are more characteristic of the species.
