Playing from the Heart Black History Month in February isn't just about African-Americans and their contributions to United States history. Black History Month is really about all Americans and the way African-Americans have made their mark on America and the world. Help your students to understand ways that black history affects them. Divide students by some random identifier, such as "blue eyes." Instruct children without blue eyes to treat those with blue eyes in a certain fashion . Be careful, because if children are allowed to mistreat other children, they can go too far. Activities for those with blue eyes must emphasize unfairness without being too harsh. For example, they might all sit in a section of the classroom with no desks and only clipboards, or they might have to use old crayons while the rest of the class gets fancy art supplies.
