In Canada some denominations may soon disappear completely, a report presented to the Anglican Church of Canada's House of Bishops suggests. Can West News Agency and Ecumenical News International report that Mr Keith McKerracher, a retired marketing expert who serves as a church advisor, has published data which shows that between 1961 and 2001, Anglican numbers plunged from 1.36 million to 642,000, a decline of 53 per cent. In fact Canadaís Anglican Church is losing some 13,000 members each year. At this rate, says the report, it is ìfacing extinction by the middle of this centuryî.

The reports include brief histories, leadership and headquarters information, and ranks the 25 largest churches by membership. The 439-page paperback Yearbook is also accessible on the Internet using a pass code printed on the inside back cover. The information in the yearbook will be updated online twice during the year. In addition, a compact disc exists of data dating from 1916 through 2000. "We at the Yearbook are pleased to take our place in this important task of annually capturing a snapshot of American religious life," says the Rev. Dr. Eileen W. Lindner, editor of the yearbook since 1998. Lindner is also Deputy General Secretary of the NCC for Research and Planning. The statistics in the 2007 Yearbook, collected by the churches in 2005 and reported in 2006, "reflect the continued overall vitality of church participation, and account for the religious affiliation of almost 166 million Americans," Lindner said.

The 2008 Yearbook features an article, "When Did We See Thee Sick? Congregations Respond," that reports the results of a groundbreaking NCC survey of more than 6,000 American congregations. The article, by the Rev. Dr. Eileen W. Lindner, editor of the Yearbook, reveals that churches spend a significant amount of time, energy and money in the ministries of health care. According to the Congregational Health Ministry Survey, conducted by the NCC with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, about 70 percent of responding churches provide direct health services, with 65 percent offering health education programs within their community. The survey defines direct services as provision of medical care to individuals by trained health care professionals. "It is not surprising to find that churches see health care as a part of their faith mission and mandate," said Lindner, who supervised the survey. "The results of this survey confirm a higher energy for health care than we might have thought, however, and show that effective health care ministries are being developed by congregations of all sizes to meet the urgent needs of their communities."

It's true. And not just Canada, but Sweden, Australia and the United Kingdom also have similar laws. These are not countries ruled by dictatorships, but countries very similar to the United States in its freedoms of speech, religion and democratic processes. These countries are now ruled by the PC (political correctness) police. America may not be far behind in restricting what is said from the pulpit, for such intimidation to the pulpit is indeed alive and well in the United States. For example, to mix the pulpit and elections hasn't been allowed in the United States since 1954 when then-senator Lyndon Baines Johnson offered an amendment to restrict nonprofit organizations, including churches, from endorsing or opposing political candidates. Should a church violate that restriction, the IRS comes down on the church with threats to revoke their non-profit status. Adding a so-called "hate crimes" restriction to the American pulpit is not far-fetched or far away in a society that increasingly calls evil "good." My heart has been burdened since hearing about the plight of our brothers and sisters in Christ just over the open border who would face jail time, fines and revoking of their non-profit status for caring enough to tell the truth. The truth they share is that sexual perversion slowly and painfully kills its practitioners, creates deadly epidemics, produces anarchy destroying the fabric of society, and disturbs the Creator who lovingly created each of us with function and purpose. The preachers are not being punished for hating or discriminating, but for loving and caring.
