Lieutenant in the Canadian Army Medical, 1914-1917. Flying Officer in the Royal Flying Corps, 1917-1918. Pearson trained as a pilot at an air training school in Hendon, England. He survived an airplane crash during his first flight but, ironically, was hit by a London bus during a blackout and was sent home as an invalid to recuperate.

    Extractions: In 1932, liberal politician "Chubby" Power quipped that the Prime Minister of Canada "exhibits the manners of a Chicago policeman and the temperament of a Hollywood actor." Sixty years later, historian Peter Waite agreed that Richard Bedford Bennett probably has the worst reputation of any Canadian prime minister. At the same time, Bennett's magnanimity towards those who approached him with their financial needs was widely known. One estimate suggests that his personal support of charitable organizations was in the area of $25,000 annually, even during the Depression. There are no figures available for the endless stream of $5.00 gifts he made to distraught ordinary individuals who wrote pleading for assistance. Born July 3, 1870, at Hopewell Hill, N.B., the young R.B. Bennett came from a family of pre-loyalist origin and modest financial means. After a brief period as a teacher and school principal, he studied law at Dalhousie University before beginning practice with L.J. Tweedie of Chatham, N.B. It was during his time in this office that he made the acquaintance of Max Aitken (Lord Beaverbrook) who became his lifelong friend. In 1897, Bennett accepted an offer to become the junior law partner of Senator James Lougheed in Calgary, Alberta. A successful law practice, coupled with shrewd investments and a substantial inheritance from the Estate of Jennie Shirreff Eddy, enabled Bennett to become extremely wealthy. After a brief, successful foray into territorial and provincial politics, Bennett was first elected to Parliament in 1911 as the member for Calgary West. Although he declined to participate in the Union Government during WWI, he returned to Parliament in the 1925 election and remained until his retirement in 1938. In 1927 he was elected leader of the Conservative Party and automatically became Leader of the Opposition.

Charles Tupper and John Thompson both successfully declined the job for different reasons but Sir John Abbott although also not enthusiastic about taking the position, was convinced to take the reins of power. Abbot understood that he was chosen "because I am not particularly obnoxious to anybody, something like the principle on which it is reported some men are selected as candidates for the Presidency of the United States...that they are harmless and have not made any enemies." Abbot was a in the Senate and 70 years old when he became Prime Minister. He was from Quebec and had opposed Confederation and had in fact supported joining the United States. Abbot was unique in that he was the first Canadian Prime Minister who ruled from the Senate. Abbot was unfortunate in that as he took power another recession was setting in and the Canadian economy ground to a halt. The other challenging issue that was again raising its head was the Manitoba school question which dated back to the entry of Manitoba into Confederation and the guarantee to fund the Catholic schools in the province. The problem arose in the massive influx of Protestants into Manitoba form Ontario and Britain. MacDonald had managed to avoid the issue by referring it to the courts but the final Privy council in London had the final say when they upheld Manitoba's law which eliminated French as an official language in the province and created a single school system of non-sectarian schools.

When he became Canada's first Liberal prime minister in 1873, he brought with him both his stonemason's skill and his democratics principles. Born in Perthshire, Scotland, he emigrated to Canada in 1842 to follow his sweethart, Helen Neil. Trained as a stonemason, he soon founded work in the rapidly growing provinces of Canada East and West. One of his first jobs was to build a bomb-proof stone arch at Fort Henry in Kingston. his next task was working on the Beauharnois Canal near Montreal. Many of the monuments raised by Mackenzie still stand in Ontario; the Welland Canal, the martello towers at Fort Henry, the Episcopal Church and bank in Sarnia courthouses and jails in Chatham amd Sandwich.

     Extractions: This is NOT a page about Diefenbaker, the dog from Due South. John George Diefenbaker was born on September 18, 1895 in Neustadt, Ontario to William and Mary (Bannerman). He was prime minister of Canada as a Progressive Conservative from June 21, 1957 to April 22, 1963. Although he spent less than six years as Prime Minister, he spent many years in the Opposition, keeping his opponents on their toes. He was married twice, to Edna Brower, then after her death, Olive Palmer. He had no children. When he died on August 16, 1979, according to his funeral plans his body was shipped from Ottawa to Saskatoon by train for burial. Thousands of Canadians lined the tracks to bid farewell to Dief.
