PDF of This Issue By Sophia Yee The Tiananmen Square crisis and how it fits into Chinese history was the focus of a lecture given on Monday by Professor Lucian W. Pye of the Department of Political Science. The lecture was part of the Independent Activities Period series, "Communism in Crisis." According to Pye, Tiananmen has become a symbol of change and of the uncertainty that has overtaken the Communist world. "Tiananmen has become a word that fits in politics, like Hiroshima, the Berlin Wall, and Pearl Harbor," he said. Pye emphasized that even though the country's mood remained good until 1987, many problems existed in China even four years before the Tiananmen crisis. He said that Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping's ideas were focused on economic reform, and the West assumed that this would move China gradually towards capitalism and democracy. He added that "the Chinese thought a compromise between a market economy, a command economy and a socialist economy [would] be possible. However, the Chinese seemed to be having spurts moving ahead, then stopping." When Deng began his reforms, there was an "outburst of energy, and the mood of the people shifted from pessimism back to optimism." Discontent grew, however, as inflation aggravated agricultural problems, leading the government to give the peasants IOUs instead of cash for their grain, he noted.

Shang There are three things to know about the Shang: one, they were the most advanced bronze-working civilization in the world; two, Shang remains provide the earliest and most complete record of Chinese writing (there are a few Neolithic pots that have a few characters scratched on them; however, a few characters do not a complete writing system make), scratched out on the shoulder blades of pigs for oracular purposes. 1046-256 B.C. Zhou Most scholars think that the Zhou were much more "Chinese" than the Shang. For one, they used a father-to-son succession system. Also, they weren't too keen on human sacrifice. However, they weren't as good at working bronze as the Shang. Still, it would be centuries before the West was able to cast bronze as well as the Zhou. Some, though not all, scholars believe that the Xia, the Shang, and the Zhou actually were three different cultures that emerged more or less at the same time in different areas of the Yellow River valley. And the historical record supports this view the Shang were conquered from outside by the Zhou, as the Xia had been conquered from the outside by the Shang.

There is now mounting evidence of several still more ancient cultures that flourished between 2500 and 2000 B.C. in central China and the lower Huang He (Yellow River) Valley of north China. For many centuries tribes of people migrated, mixed, and developed their civilizations. As the river basins of China were relatively isolated from other parts of the globe distinctive systems of writing, philosophy, art, and political organization slowly developed and came to be recognizable as 'Chinese civilization.' Over the centuries the Chinese developed a strong sense of their real and mythological origins. Since very early times they have kept voluminous records of their history and the development of their civilization. These records cover not only China but also many of its neighbors, and even mention places as far away as Arabia and Rome.

It is located in Taosi Village, Xiangyuan County in Shanxi Province. This was the legendary center of the Emperor Yao, the first emperor in China, and his political activities. The key finding pushes the origin of Chinese civilization back to the Five-Emperor age. According to a report of China Central Television, the wall of the city, known to have existed 4,200 to 4,500 years ago, is about 130 meters long and stretches from east to west. Experts point out that that time was during the legendary period of the Yao, Shun, and Yu emperors, and that the city is most probably the place where the main constructions of that time were erected.

It represents the wisdom accumulated over 5,000 years of Chinese history. Together with Confucianism and Buddhism, it has been continuously guiding Chinese in behaviors and governing. There are some very basic different approaches taken by the West and Chinese philosophies. The West treats individual as an independent and separate entity. Chinese treats individual as an element in the whole universe and is interrelated. West tends to be self-centered and thus any blame will be first on others. On the opposite, Chinese is taught to merge self into the environment as a whole or there is no self at all. Tao and Taoism are different from "God" and "Bible". To understand Taoism, one has to "unlearn" or break out from own paradigm to view it from a completely new angle. "Tao" means "behavior, understanding and the constant changing from and to". Taoism is a philosophy and a belief of simplicity and the very nature of universe. There is no absolute "stillness". Everything, including the universe, is changing all the time. The relative "stability" can be achieved when a harmony is reached between "Yin" and "Yang", which are said to be the opposite but related natural forces in the universe. There are five elements in everything. The following diagram described their interrelationship.

Extractions: Highlights ... Questions? The Chinese Historical and Cultural Project (CHCP) is based in Santa Clara County, California. It was founded in 1987 as a non-profit organization to promote and preserve Chinese American and Chinese history and culture through community outreach activities. The leadership of the organization is comprised of volunteers Officers, Board of Directors, and Advisory Board. A Board of Trustees oversees the major maintenance of the Ng Shing Gung Museum with the City of San Jose and History San Jose. CHCP's first major project was to reconstruct the Ng Shing Gung , a religious and community center originally built in 1888 in San Jose's "Heinlenville" settlement, the last Chinatown of San Jose. In 1991, CHCP donated the Ng Shing Gung Museum to the City of San Jose, making it available to the community at the History Park, at Kelley Park, San Jose. The museum building lower floor serves as a Chinese-American Museum telling the stories of the early Chinese pioneers in Santa Clara Valley. The second floor showcases the original 1888 gold-gilded altar and the five gods. The short documentary movie of the last Chinatown in San Jose, Homebase: A Chinatown Called Heinlenville , was directed by Jessica Yu, an Oscar-award winner, and can be viewed upstairs at the Ng Shing Gung Museum.
