What is its influence in the computer performance? In this tutorial we will answer all these questions and more. Chipset is the name given to the set of chips (hence its name) used on a motherboard. On the first PCs, the motherboard used discrete integrated circuits. So a lot of chips were needed to create all the necessary circuitry to make the computer work. In Figure 1, you can see a motherboard from a PC XT.

Extractions: Grand Copthorne Waterfront hotel, Singapore Intel will phase out production of three low-end chipsets for desktop PCs in favor of selling its higher-end and Centrino-based products, CNET News.com has learned. The move, expected to take place by the end of August, could delay shipments of low-end PCs from various manufacturers for a couple of months. Sources close to the chipmaking giant's dealings confirmed reports that Intel would shutter production of its 910GL, 915GL and 915PL chipsets. The three microcontrollers that help feed the main brain of Pentium 4 and Celeron D chips were expected to make up about 20 percent of Intel's desktop chipset supply in the second half of this year. An Intel representative dismissed reports suggesting the company was exiting the low-end chipset business altogether but said the company was in the middle of making changes to its manufacturing plants to make way for more mobile-focused and high-performance products. Despite reports of which products would be phased out, Intel declined to officially state which chipsets would be put on the back burner.

Extractions: BNET Log In Join Search GlobeSpan, Inc., a leading worldwide developer of programmable digital subscriber line (DSL) chipsets, Monday announced a firmware upgrade to its Titanium chipsets, making Titanium the first ADSL chipset family to support splitterless operation with all ADSL standards. Now service providers can deploy any version of ADSL, including G.dmt (ITU G.992.1), G.lite (ITU G.992.2), ANSI T1.413 Issue 2 or ANSI TR-59 (RADSL), without the time and expense of a "truck roll", previously needed to send technicians to deploy ADSL service at customers' premises. Earlier this month during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, GlobeSpan demonstrated its multimode splitterless ADSL capability, including "Fast Retrain" for G.lite, enabling data services to share the same telephone line with POTS voice services without needing large expensive splitters to isolate the ADSL signal from the POTS signal. This capability is especially critical now that the FCC has ruled that telephone companies must allow unbundled line sharing of data and voice services on the same copper wire pair.
