No traditional animated movies with songs and a hit soundtrack this year. Only a beautiful blend of live action scenery and computer generated dinosaurs. And since it is from Disney, it will make large amounts of money regardless of whether or not it is a good movie. But again, it is a Disney animated movie, so chances are relatively good that it is above par. Simply put, Dinosaur is a Disney movie, and all of the attributes that go with one are here (i.e., lack of a mother, happy ending...). The story by John Harrison and Robert Nelson Jacobs is even simpler than many other animated films. The sweeping beginning (the same short seen in the trailers) shows an egg as it passes between dinosaurs before landing on an island. Aladar (D.B. Sweeney, Goosed, Fox's Harsh Realm ), and Iguanadon, grew up among a family of lemurs led by Yar (Ossie Davis, Old Hats, Paul Robeson: Here I Stand

Back in 1905, an early film called "Prehistoric Man" is believed to have featured the first animated dinosaur. Then animation pioneer Winsor McCay made "Gertie the Dinosaur" and Willis O'Brian did "The Lost World." Others followed. Disney showed a battle between a Tyrannosaurus Rex and a Stegosaur in the original "Fantasia" and, in 1993, "Jurassic Park" introduced the first computer-generated dinosaurs. IMAX then did a 3-D version with "T-Rex: Back to the Cretaceous." So this visually thrilling, technical marvel, "Dinosaur" continues the legacy, ingeniously depicting these giant reptiles with expressive, distinctive personalities in a wondrous "photorealistic" world, blending digitally enhanced live-action photography, special effects, and computer-animated characters.

Despite a budget of reportedly US$200 million and boasting some eye-popping visuals, Walt Disney's latest animated feature is a boring, lifeless feature that will probably have very little appeal to anyone old enough to spell the word "dinosaur". The film is set approximately 65 million years ago during the Cretaceous period, late in the game for the dinosaur species. As the film opens, we witness the long journey of a large egg as it is picked from its mother's nest and transported to a far away island. It lands in the hands of a family of monkey-like creatures named Lemurs, led by the patriarch Yar (Ossie Davis). Despite his protests and fears of taking care of a meat-eater, Yar and his family take the foreign creature, an Iguanodon that will be known as Aladar, as one of their own family members (wouldn't Tarzan have been a better name?). All seems like paradise for Aladar and his Lemur family for a while, that is until a massive meteor show nearly wipes everyone out. They do manage to escape, but their home is destroyed. So begins the long journey to find a new home, one that has the group meeting up with a herd of migrating dinosaurs.

But the seemingly impossible has occurred within the 66-million-year-old skeleton of a small, plant-eating Thescelosaurus , nicknamed 'Willo' and the structure of the heart is surprisingly advanced. This website is a project of the Center for the Exploration of the Dinosaurian World, now being planned as a collaborative research venture by the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and North Carolina State University, both in Raleigh, N.C. The website has been established to present information about the unique fossil, reported in the April 21, 2000 issue of the journal Science A team of scientists in North Carolina and Oregon used medical technology to probe an iron-stained concretion inside the dinosaur's chest. With the aid of imaging equipment and software, they were able to reconstruct 3-dimensional structures through the interior of the concretion. The images reveal a heart that was more like that of a bird or a mammal than those of reptiles, adding substantially to evidence suggesting that at least some dinosaurs had high metabolic rates.
