Extractions: View other movie reviews Find a movie: Battlefield Earth Sometimes, it is just too easy. Battlefield Earth defies description. It is done so badly that it is easily the worst movie of the year thus far. Regardless of what anyone may say, the only reason this film exists is because John Travolta wanted to make it. The novel Battlefield Earth is by L. Ron Hubbard, founder of the Church of Scientology, of which Travolta is a member. In fact, Travolta originally was to play the lead in the film, but by the time production finally started (the film was pushed around for nearly two decades), he was too old. The film by no means espouses any principles of Scientology. Unless of course, greed, stupidity, and revolution are basic tenets (our lawyers are telling us not to make any jokes right now, but it is hard to resist). Travolta ( A Civil Action, The General's Daughter ) is an overrated actor. He is not a bad actor, but then again, he is not a good one. He is merely a decent one, and for some reason, many people adore him more than he deserves. Here, he is pitiful. He plays Terl, a Psychlo. The Psychlos conquered Earth long ago and enslaved humanity (they call them man-animals). Travolta tries to come off as evil, but merely seems stupid. Half of the sounds coming out of his mouth are laughs, and try as he might, Travolta's evil laugh does not sound such. Forrest Whitaker (

Some reviewers thought it was the worst film since Batman and Robin . Others said it was the worst film since Showgirls . And a third camp suggested it was the worst film since Ishtar Movies can be bad in different ways. Sure, every bad film is bad in its own precious way, but there are general categories. There are movies that are hobbled by extreme poverty, like Manos, the Hands of Fate . There are extremely sleazy films, like The Lonely Lady . There are movies that have troubled production histories, like Waterworld Battlefield Earth is a very special kind of bad movie. It doesn't have any of the problems we just mentioned, being well funded, practically chaste (except for one alien hooker), and the filmmakers made a big deal about their ability to produce their exact vision. No, Battlefield Earth is incompetent on nearly every level because the people who made it were apparently incapable of seeing that they were making a stinker. This movie is an astonishing spectacle to watch, because it's almost impossible to believe that so many allegedly creative people could have been involved in the production of this movie, but no one said, "Hey John, you're making an ass out of yourself by overacting like that," or, "Does it make sense that Terl would accept that Jonnie mined gold

Extractions: I don't regret it though. This delightfully silly piece of sci-fi schlock delivers enough moments of camp insanity to keep bad movie fans satisfied at least until the next Bruckheimer production. Based on a novel by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, and starring and produced by Scientologist John Travolta, Battlefield Earth has been plagued by accusations that it is merely propaganda for that quasi-religion. I would challenge anyone who considers leveling such charges to see the film firstif they can find one coherent idea in the picture, Scientologist or otherwise, then charge away. Otherwise I say grab a popcorn and get a giggle or two. The premise holds some promise . . . the year is 3000, and some time ago the Earth was conquered by the Psychlos, who we know are evil because their name sounds like "psychos". Remaining humans hide out in the hills, their civilization reduced to hooting and wooden gates and crude leather garb (not the shiny black leather of advance techno-futures, but rather the crummy brown leather of primitive dystopian futures.)

Extractions: In DOWN TO EARTH, Chris Rock plays a struggling standup comic, Lance Barton, whose jokes "I know this gal so ugly she had to wear makeup on the radio" have been dying. As he tries to get ready for his life's dream, a slot at the amateur night in the last show at the famous Apollo theater, he ends up even deader than his material. Not one to let a technicality like a heavenly address get in his way, he negotiates with the heavenly powers (Chazz Palminteri and Eugene Levy) to insert him into another earthly body so he can play his big gig. For the record, the hereafter looks like a big blue nightclub. If this plot sounds familiar, it should. DOWN TO EARTH is a remake of the 1978 film HEAVEN CAN WAIT, starring Warren Beatty. That film, confusingly, was itself a remake, not of the 1943 film HEAVEN CAN WAIT, but of the 1941 picture HERE COMES MR. JORDAN. Now that we've gotten that straightened out, we can proceed.

Extractions: Starring: Chris Rock, Eugene Levy, Regina King, Chazz Palminteri, Wanda Sykes, Jennifer Coolidge and Mark Addy. Down To Earth tries to go where so many have gone before so when it does pull laughs it is a nice surprise but the real treat is that though this film is nothing to rally around, it is at least, an inoffensive little waste of time. Chris Rock executive produced his way through this one and there were some smart decisions made right off the top. Bringing in Chris and Paul Weitz to direct while basing this 'urban' comedy on Warren Beatty's Heaven Can Wait (in turn, based on Here Comes Mr. Jordan) were all good ideas, but some of the best moves were in the supporting cast decisions. Into the plot quickly, as this is a remake of a remake. Chris Rock plays Lance Barton, bike courier and aspiring stand-up. He gets ploughed down by a Mack truck and no more Lance. Well, not really because he was taken just a trifle early by Keyes (Eugene Levy). Once in heaven they realize the mistake is made and King (Chazz Palminteri) makes a deal with Lance, he can return to Earth in another person's body until they find a suitable host for a permanent lodging. Lance inevitably finds himself forced to take over the body of Charles Wellington the III so he can get close to his 'soulmate' Sontee Jenkins (Regina King).
