As the waters rose behind this 2,000-foot ice dam, they flooded the valleys of western Montana. At its greatest extent, Glacial Lake Missoula stretched eastward a distance of some 200 miles, essentially creating an inland sea. Periodically, the ice dam would fail. These failures were often catastrophic, resulting in a large flood of ice- and dirt-filled water that would rush down the Columbia River drainage, across northern Idaho and eastern and central Washington, through the Columbia River Gorge, back up into Oregon's Willamette Valley, and finally pour into the Pacific Ocean at the mouth of the Columbia River. The glacial lake, at its maximum height and extent, contained more than 500 cubic miles of water. When Glacial Lake Missoula burst through the ice dam and exploded downstream, it did so at a rate 10 times the combined flow of all the rivers of the world. This towering mass of water and ice literally shook the ground as it thundered towards the Pacific Ocean, stripping away thick soils and cutting deep canyons in the underlying bedrock. With flood waters roaring across the landscape at speeds approaching 65 miles per hour, the lake would have drained in as little as 48 hours.

More information here During the last Ice Age (18,000 to 12,000 years ago), and in multiple previous Ice Ages, cataclysmic floods inundated portions of the Pacific Northwest from Glacial Lake Missoula, pluvial Lake Bonneville, and perhaps from subglacial outbursts. Glacial Lake Missoula was a body of water as large as some of the USA's Great Lakes. This lake formed from glacial meltwater that was dammed by a lobe of the Canadian ice sheet. Episodically, perhaps every 40 to 140 years, the waters of this huge lake forced its way past the ice dam, inundating parts of the Pacific Northwest. Storm warnings were still in force across the region, with more rains feared later in the day. Correspondents say residents are furious that they were neither warned about the impending floods, nor offered help after they had struck. Emergency Ministry officials in Moscow say 90 houses have been flooded, and some 600 people from around the port have been evacuated. The rain caused rivers and lakes to burst their banks swept away homes and bridges, as well as cutting off power and rail links, leaving hundreds stranded.

Officials said the Vltava was still rising at about 10-15cm every hour, with only 60cm left between the water and the top of the sandbags. An official told the Reuters news agency that the river was expected to peak between 2pm and 6pm GMT.

Extractions: North Dakota East Grand Forks. Photo: Mary Ann Draves On Friday, April 18, 1997, the Red River poured over the dikes into the Lincoln Drive neighborhood of Grand Forks. By the end of the next day, Saturday, April 19 , floodwaters had spread over large areas of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks , 60,000 people were out of their homes, and downtown Grand Forks was burning. The downtown fire would destroy or damage eleven buildings on three blocks, including the offices of the Grand Forks Herald newspaper. But the Herald never missed a day of publication, despite having no offices or presses. Many residents were away from their homes for a week or more, before the floodwaters receded enough for them to reach their homes and see the damage. Almost every home in East Grand Forks, and most homes in Grand Forks had flood damage. Residents considered themselves "fortunate" if only their basement was flooded. Many residents lost their house, car, and everything else they own, and now must start over. Some neighborhoods, such as Lincoln Drive in Grand Forks and Sherlock Park in East Grand Forks, will never be rebuilt.

Extractions: Hurricane Katrina The Mississippi at Prairie du Chien, Wis. For many communities along the upper Mississippi River, the 2001 flood brought the second highest water levels on record. The 2001 flood crest exceeded the crests from the 1993 and 1997 flood at most locations. Only the 1965 flood was worse. Over the winter of 2000 - 2001, there was heavy snow in southern Wisconsin, northern Iowa, and southern Minnesota. A late, rapid snowmelt combined with heavy rain, led to the flood. There were actually two flood crests in 2001 at many locations. The first occurred around April 20 to 25. Additional rain led to a second crest the week of April 29. The early Spring flood forcasts indicated only minor flooding along the Mississippi. In early April, it became apparent that rapidly warming temperatures and rain would lead to significant flooding. The National Weather Service issued new forcasts calling for near record flooding in many locations, and the sandbagging began.
