As a result of these Gallic Wars, Roman emperor Julius Caesar conquered the entirety of Gaul for the Roman Empire by 51 B.C. The Celts that lived in Gaul took on Roman customs and even a form of Latin, the official language of the Romans. The Celts of Gaul lived under Roman rule until the third century AD. It was then that the Roman defenses began falling to German invaders from the west, including Visigoths, Burgundians, and Franks who crossed the Rhine River and took over land in Gaul. At the end of Roman rule, a Frank named Clovis became king of Gaul in 486. Gaul ultimately took the name France from its new ruler. Under Clovis' rule, much of France was Christianized. Clovis was the first king of what became known as the Merovingian Dynasty. An advisor to a later Merovingian king, Pepin the Herstal, led the country away from its king in the late 600‘s. Although he didn't take the title of king, Pepin the Herstal and his son, Charles Martel, unofficially ruled the country. In 751, Martel's son, Pepin the Short, overthrew the Merovingian king and named himself king of France, beginning the Carolingian Dynasty.

It began as an offshoot from the famous reformed Congregation of St-Vannes . The reform had spread from Lorraine into France through the influence of Prior Cluny in Paris , who inaugurated the reform in his own college . Thence it spread to St-Augustin de Limoges St-Faron de Meaux, to , and to the Blancs-Manteaux in Paris . In 1618 a general chapter of the Congregation of St-Vannes was held at St-Mansuet de Toul, whereat it was decided that an independent congregation should be erected for the reformed houses in France , having its superior residing within that kingdom . This proposal was supported by Louis XIII as well as by Cardinals de Retz and Richelieu ; letters patent were granted by the king, and the new organization was named the Congregation of St-Maur in order to obviate any rivalry between its component houses. It was formally approved by Pope Gregory XV on 17 May, 1621, an approval that was confirmed by Urban VIII six years later. The reform was welcomed by many of great influence at the

For eight years I have done the token medical tests that the Tour gives its riders each year. It consisted of a two-minute EKG, weight, height, fat test, blood pressure, pulse, and lung capacity test. That was it, the whole procedure had the riders in and out in under ten minutes. This year because of all the past doping problems and the French crackdown on doping I was expecting something different. I was wrong, it was the same test as usual only quicker. George did get into a bit of trouble at the medical testing with our director. Johan jumped out of his seat saying, " George what the hell have you been doing?" He saw George had no tan lines when he took off his shirt for the EKG testing. You're supposed to be training before the Tour, not hanging out at the beach. There are always a few hiccups while traveling to the start of Tour. The Gerona boys George, Christian, Tyler, and Johnathon had a delayed flight leaving Barcelona and they missed their connection in Nice. They were supposed to arrive in Nantes at the team hotel around 5 p.m. Instead, they didn't show up till 11:30 p.m. Another hiccup happened when Mark Gorski and his crew arrived at Paris-Orly from America. I will know more details tomorrow, but they were delayed about three or four hours in customs. They were bringing some T-shirts for the team but a problem arose with customs because they had the Tour logo on them. I think it was some kind of trademark infringement thing.

Nazi Germany occupied three fifths of France's territory (Northern France and the entire French Atlantic Coast) and on July 10, 1940 established a new French government based at the town of Vichy. This government, was commonly referred to as Vichy France and was headed by Henri Philippe Pétain, a General during World War One. Its senior leaders acquiesced in the plunder of French resources, as well as the sending of French forced labor to Nazi Germany; in doing so, they claimed they hoped to preserve at least some small amount of French sovereignty. In the meantime, civilian anti-semites and Vichy officials aided in the concentration and persecution of Jews, in particular those of foreign citizenship. Luckily, his editor, Henri Desgrange, believed in his idea and agreed to back Lefevre’s Tour de France. On July 1, 1903, 60 cycling pioneers set out on their bicycles from Montgeron. After tackling six long stages (the Nantes to Paris stage was 471 km!), only 21 “routiers,” led by Maurice Garin, arrived at the end. Provoking a mixture of astonishment and admiration, le Tour soon won the hearts of the French. Each year roadside crowds swelled as they cheered on the racers. Since its inception, the Tour has been run every year except war years, with 2010 marking the 97th race. The longest interruption was from 1940 to 1946, during World War II. During this time, the German Propaganda Staff wanted the Tour to be run in an attempt to maintain a sense of normalcy, but then-organizer Jacques Goddet (Desgrange’s deputy and successor) refused. In 1944, L’Auto was closed and its belongings, including the Tour, were seized by the state for publishing articles too close to the Germans. Despite undergoing a number of changes in sponsorship and organizers over the years, the Tour returned in 1947 and has continued virtually unchanged until today.
