The Research Council bears national responsibility for research policy-related activities to analyse and develop gender research, gender perspectives as well as gender equality in research. The Council is also responsible for initiating, implementing and monitoring research activities within this field. In Norway, all public institutions are required by law to work actively to promote gender equality, and these efforts are to be documented each year. Norwegian universities and university colleges have drawn up specific action plans on gender equality. In 2007 the Ministry of Education and Research established a national committee to promote gender equality in science.

Although a panel of representatives from both divisions will supply focus by having provided brief abstracts/position statements ahead of time (on-line and as a handout for attendees), no one will actually present a paper. A brief, experiential stimulus exercise will be used to actively engage all participants. The goal of the session is to reaffirm the ties between the two sponsoring divisions and to serve as a reminder of the common commitments and foci shared. Participant Summaries My professional interest in the psychology of men and masculinity began more than 20 years ago when I first began teaching graduate courses in the psychology of women. It quickly became obvious to me that society was not going to become more fair toward and nurturing of women until we also examined companion gender-role socialization issues for men. These gender-role messages functioned as two sides of the same problem. As I pursued these two interests, I began to see them as inseparable and viewed feminism as aimed toward freeing all people from the limitations of gender roles. Hence, I view feminism as a pathway for both women and men to free themselves from restrictive role expectations. One goal is true gender understanding of each other's perspectives and experiences.

NYCAS / Anasuya Sengupta  NYCAS 2010, The College at Brockport is honored to welcome Anasuya Sengupta as our guest speaker on Gender Issues. She is scheduled on Friday, October 1, 2010 from 2:30-3:20 in Edward Hall, the Blue Room.  Anasuya spent her childhood in north Karnataka, an arid and resource-poor region of southern India, and returned here after her undergraduate degree in Economics (Honors) from Delhi University. She served as a Program Officer at Samuha, an organization working with village women on issues of livelihoods security.  From 2001 to 2007, Anasuya headed a UNICEF (India) partnership with the Karnataka State Police, and was responsible for designing and implementing a state wide system of police response to issues of violence against women and children. Over the same period, she served as Program Associate with Gender at Work, an international knowledge network for gender equality, and advised the Young Women and Leadership/Young Feminist Activism Program of the Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID).  She is actively involved with Development Alternatives for Women in a New Era (DAWN), a global South network of women's activists, working across Asia-Pacific, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. Anasuya founded the White Ribbon Campaign for Peace (India), and has been part of national and regional networks against religious and cultural fundamentalisms. She co-edited and contributed to Defending Our Dreams: Global Feminist Voices for a New Generation (AWID and Zed Books, 2006), arguably the first international anthology of young feminist analyses.

A s a discipline, Women's Studies addresses issues previously neglected by traditional disciplines, and adapts and redefines theories and methods from those disciplines. Women's studies is not simply the study of women and women's issues. It is the study of women which places women's own experiences at the center of inquiry. What other disciplines use as assumptions about women, Women's Studies poses as questions. As a result, Women's Studies produces its own body of scholarship, and at the same time casts new light on traditional disciplines. T he UTA Women's Studies Program is a flexible and coherent interdisciplinary program taught by faculty from diverse fields. The program offers students a unique opportunity to complement a traditional discipline with a self-designed minor. It also can constitute an area of concentration for the Interdisciplinary Studies major.
