Prior to the Education Reform Act of 2000, Georgia offered grants to local school systems to operate alternative schools, called Crossroads Schools. Grants are no longer offered and each school system is required to provide an alternative program. However, the new regulations allow the use of in-school programs including in-school suspension to meet the requirement, so many school systems, including the Gordon County Schools and the City of Calhoun Schools have closed their freestanding alternative schools. The Bartow Crossroads Academy is located in Bartow County, one county to the south of Gordon. This high school serves students in ninth to twelfth grades and is operated by the Bartow County School System.
