Shoestring Victory: Finding space in unexpected places Posted Jun 03 2009 12:24am Gibbon photo courtesy of www.uq.edu.au Researchers studying a population of wild gibbons in Thailand have found that these great apes recombine sounds to convey different meanings to one another, exhibiting a form of simple syntax. The researchers, psychologists Esther Clarke and Klaus Zuberbuhler of the University of St. Andrews, claim that the ability to recombine sounds for varied meanings has not previously been demonstrated in apes. Their report was published in December of 2006 in the online journal PLoS ONE Before this study, psychologists had held that syntax developed in pre-historic people in response to a growing vocabulary. But this is not the case with gibbons, whose vocal abilities are limited. So perhaps previous theories about the development of syntax in humans will need to be reexamined.

Extractions: From Atom Bomb to Cancer Cure in One Lifetime? (Let us pray.) Back before WWII, one of the whiz-kids of science in Germany was a chap by the name of Manfred von Ardenne. A brilliant physicist, he contributed to the development of the oscilloscope and cathode ray tubes that soon made television possible. He was a principal pioneer in the realm of electron microscopy. What happened to him during the war is a matter of conjecture, but at its conclusion he was taken into custody and delivered into the presence of the dreaded head of the Soviet secret police, one Lavrenti Pavlovich Beria. Beria had it on good authority, it seems, that the one man most likely to succeed in building the atomic bomb for Stalin was MvA. MvA allowed that he was not terribly eager to accept this "honor." Still, the sequela of a refusal, Beria quickly convinced the scientist, with a deft slash of the forefinger across the adam's apple, would be none too pleasant.
Extractions: Skip to main content Colorado Springs Change city Search You are here: Giraffes greet you at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo I know what you are thinking - the zoo does not count as a hike. Right? Wrong. The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is nestled against Cheyenne Mountain and provides very hilly terrain and great views of the city. Sounds like any other hike in the Colorado Springs area (with some extra costs, people, and, oh yeah, animals). Like many young families in Colorado Springs, my wife and I decided last year to get the year-long pass from the zoo so that we could take our 2-year-old son there as often as we wanted. It turned out to be an excellent investment. It turns out that toddlers love the zoo, well, at least ours does. A trip to the zoo is not complete without the obligatory feeding of the giraffes. Once through the giraffe exhibit, the path takes you through the wild hog and then the meerkat area and then up towards the elephants, lions, and birds. At this point, the path becomes steeper, and if you're carrying a toddler or pushing a stroller, you can rest assured that you are going to get a good workout.
