SCAR (Scientific Committee On Antarctic Research) Developed an international science plan for global change research in the antarctic, under the title; The Role of the Antarctic in Global Change and oversee the implementation and coordination of this antarctic research together with the major global programmes. http://www.scar.org/
Extractions: Welcome to the Home Page of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), an inter-disciplinary committee of the International Council for Science (ICSU) . SCAR is charged with initiating, developing and coordinating high quality international scientific research in the Antarctic region, and on the role of the Antarctic region in the Earth system. The scientific business of SCAR is conducted by its Standing Scientific Groups which represent the scientific disciplines active in Antarctic research and report to SCAR. In addition to carrying out its primary scientific role, SCAR also provides objective and independent scientific advice to the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings and other organizations on issues of science and conservation affecting the management of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. In that role, SCAR has made numerous recommendations on a variety of matters, most of which have been incorporated into Antarctic Treaty instruments. Foremost amongst these have been the advice provided for the many international agreements which provide protection for the ecology and environment of the Antarctic. SCAR meets every two years to conduct its administrative business at the SCAR Delegates Meeting. At these meetings the members of SCAR, through their appointed Delegates, are responsible for approving SCAR finances, and formulating SCAR policy and strategy. They also elect an Executive Committee from among themselves which is responsible for the day-to-day administration of SCAR though its Secretariat at the Scott Polar Research Institute in Cambridge, England. Search The Southern Global Change Program (SGCP) is part of the Eastern Forest Environmental Threat Assessment Center (EFETAC) research work unit (RWU-4854) and program of the USDA Forest Service Southern Research Station . Our research scientists and support staff work hard to contribute new science every year in the areas of forest ecosystems, water quality, biodiversity, and wildfires, all with an emphasis on climate change and global warming. SGCP has regional, national, and international responsibilities in several key research areas focusing on healthy forest ecosystems and addressing forest health risks. Using a combination of computer models, geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, and field research in its integrated assessments, SGCP is a Forest Service leader in examining multiple stress impacts across multiple natural resource sectors.
Center For Global Change The focal point of this facility at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is for developing, coordinating and implementing interdisciplinary research and education related to the role of the Arctic and sub-Arctic in the Earth system, and to stimulate and facilitate global change research in this region. http://www.cgc.uaf.edu/
Extractions: A campus-wide framework for linking knowledge and people Although the Earth system is constantly changing, ozone depletion, increases in atmospheric greenhouse gases, large-scale pollution and changing patterns of natural resource use demonstrate that human activities are altering the Earth system at an accelerated pace. Awareness of this has led to an evolving international consensus on the importance of both increasing our scientific understanding of global change and linking scientific findings to policy decisions. The Arctic is characterized by one of the most extreme environments on the planet, with limited sunlight, extreme temperatures, and a short growing season. Sea ice, snow cover, glaciers, tundra, permafrost, boreal forests, and peatlands are all sensitive indicators of change, susceptible to subtle variations in sunlight, surface temperature, ocean heat transport, air and ocean chemistry, and the particulate loading of the atmosphere.
Extractions: The University of Michigan's Global Change Curriculum , part of the Program in the Environment , offers an innovative approach in undergraduate science and social science education. In interdisciplinary, team-taught courses the topic of Global Change from physical and human perspectives are examined, and case studies are used to explore scenarios for sustainability. Complementary small-group sessions are used to promote students' critical thinking and analysis. The courses are mostly aimed at first and second year students who want to understand the historical and modern aspects of Global Change. These two 4-credit courses include hands-on sections and carry NS and SS distribution credit. A Minor in Global Change can be completed in the first few years of study, with the two Global Change Courses at its core. Students learn further through the completion of one 200-level class and two electives from campus-wide courses in bio-, geo- or sociosphere. Contact us: globalchange@umich.edu

Our work supports and gives guidance to women, youth and any group that has been marginalized from full participation in the economic, political and social life of their communities and countries. We design interactive workshops, seminars and courses to provide the tools and practical knowledge that enhance the ability of people everywhere to craft new roles and new realities; and, throughout, we celebrate and document the impact that self-recognition and expression can have for those who once were silent. Paltsev Joint Program Report Series , 2009 (20 pages) To evaluate the socio-economic impacts of air pollution, we develop an integrated approach based on computable general equilibrium (CGE). Applying our approach to Europe shows that even there, where air quality is relatively high compared with other parts of the world, health-related damages caused by air pollution are substantial. We estimate that in 2005, air pollution in Europe caused a consumption loss of around 220 billion Euro (year 2000 prices, around 3 percent of consumption level) and a social welfare loss of around 370 billion Euro, measured as the sum of lost consumption and leisure (around 2 percent of welfare level). In addition, we estimated that a set of 2020-targeting air quality improvement policy scenarios, which are proposed in the 2005 CAFE program, would bring 18 European countries as a whole a welfare gain of 37 to 49 billion Euro (year 2000 prices) in year 2020 alone....
