MeSH Goodpasture’s syndrome (also known as Goodpasture’s disease and anti-glomerular basement antibody disease ) is a rare condition characterized by glomerulonephritis and hemorrhaging of the lungs Although many diseases can present with these symptoms, the name Goodpasture’s syndrome is usually reserved for the autoimmune disease triggered when the patient’s immune system attacks Goodpasture antigen (a type II hypersensitivity reaction ), which is found in the kidney and lung, and in time, causing damage to these organs. The disease bears the name of the American pathologist Dr. Ernest Goodpasture of Vanderbilt University , whose 1919 description is regarded as the first report on the existence of the condition. The GBM antigen responsible for this disease is a component of the non-collagenous domain (NC1) of the alpha-3 chain of collagen type IV. Goodpasture’s syndrome can cause people to cough up blood or feel a burning sensation when urinating. But its first signs may be vague, such as fatigue, nausea, difficulty breathing, or skin pallor. These signs are followed by kidney involvement, represented first by small amounts of blood in the urine, protein in the urine, and other clinical and laboratory findings.

However, some forms of the disease involve just the lung or kidney, not both. Goodpasture syndrome is an autoimmune disorder , a condition that occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys healthy body tissue. Persons with this syndrome develop substances that attack a protein called collagen in the tiny air sacs in the lungs and the filtering units (glomureli) of the kidney. These substances are called anti-glomerular basement membrane antibodies. Glomerular basement membrane is a part of the kidneys that helps filter waste and extra fluid from the blood. Anti -glomerular basement membrane are antibodies against this membrane. They can lead to kidney damage. Sometimes the disorder is triggered by a viral respiratory infection or by breathing in hydrocarbon solvents. In such cases, the immune system may attack organs or tissues because it mistakes them for these viruses or foreign chemicals. The immune system's faulty response causes bleeding in the air sacs and inflammation in the kidney's filtering units.

With Goodpasture syndrome, however, the immune system makes antibodies that attack the lungs and kidneys, instead of the germs. According to the National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse, this condition may last anywhere from a few weeks to as long as two years. In some cases, bleeding in the lungs may occur - resulting in a very serious condition. However, in most cases, Goodpasture syndrome does not cause permanent damage to the lungs. Damage to the kidneys, however, may be long-lasting. If the kidneys fail, kidney transplantation or dialysis therapy may become necessary. Goodpasture syndrome may be an inherited condition, or may develop as a result of a combination of factors. The following are the most common symptoms of Goodpasture syndrome. However, each individual may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:
